What to say about the wonderful Trolleite? It's going to be a long-term favorite. It's beautiful to look at, soothing to touch, easy to carry during an active or restful day, and restful to dream with. Of the stones I reach for to keep my calm when things are stressful, this one feels a little different, not just a combination of help not to engage with stress (like Variscite or Tourmaline Moonstone or Howlite) and blue stone clarity (like Iolite or Blue Jade), it has those two kinds of qualities, and also something of an energy I usually associate with pink stones, a heart warmth.

This Trolliete comes from an artisanal mining co-op near the city of Vitoria, in Espirito Santo, Brazil.  It is most likely coming from Amethyst mining, since the Trolleite is intergrown with Quartz.  These mines are underground and have a low environmental impact.

This mine and gem dealer are a family business in Brazil. The family owns a small Lithium Quartz mine. They also have relationships with miner co-ops and lapidary co-ops around Brazil. The mother of the family is particularly passionate about ethical sourcing. All workers are safe and paid fair wages.

I first met this source at the 2020 Tucson Gem Show. I was surprised to see a sign that advertised “ethical sourcing” and immediately went to investigate. I discovered a Brazilian family business, run by a father, mother, and their sons. The business has existed for over 30 years, but recently the mother became concerned about conditions in Brazilian mines and polishing factories, and their effect on local communities. She gradually transformed the business following the principles of Fair Trade and articulated her own ethical values. Among these values are: to be environmentally friendly, work with miners co-ops, have a participatory workplace, develop long-term relationships, sponsor education for miners’ children, and respect cultural identities.

I had a long conversation with this inspiring woman, discussing both our own businesses as well as the larger industry. We already shared many of the same values, but I was intrigued by her commitment to respecting cultural identities. In Brazil, mines are often located on land owned by indigenous peoples. Often, miners are from somewhere else and usually don’t have any vested interest in protecting the local environment or distributing wealth into the local economy. To respect cultural identities means to do business with local indigenous peoples, rather than transient outsiders.

Trolleite is a rare blue mineral with an exceptionally calm energy.  It was first discovered in 1868 in a Swedish iron mine and was named after a Swedish scientist.  It is usually a light blue color, but the gem is sometimes found intergrown with Lazulite, which will change Trolleite into a darker blue.  It is a wonderful stone for mental clarity and peace.  It is strongly attuned to the element of water and reminds us to “be like water,” ever adaptable and able to flow around obstacles.  Highly recommended for anyone ready to take charge of your own mental and emotional health.
