Supply Chain for Turritella Agate

This Turritella Agate comes from a small mine in the Green River Formation, Wyoming, USA. The mining has a low environmental impact and is low risk for miners.

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Turritella Agate Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published December 2015  •  Updated August 2024 •  Read Time: 6 minutes
Turritella Agate are ancient snail fossils that has been agatized by mineral replacement.  It is found only in southwestern Wyoming.  Originally scientists thought the fossils belonged to salt water snails, whose family name is Turritella.  We now know they’re the freshwater snail, Elimia tenera, which flourished in Wyoming’s lakes 50 million years ago.  Turritella Agate is a wonderful stone for teaching patience and reminds us to have good personal boundaries.  Most snails are hermaphrodites and snail energy can help us be more comfortable with sexuality in all its variety, and to embrace both our masculine and feminine sides. The turritella agate has lots of beautiful shells! I read up on the snail power, and I’ve got to say it pretty has properties that I need. I’m an engineer and work a lot, so slowing down is something that I need to do more of. Plus I need to eat better, so there’s that too.

What an amazing Turritella, such an abundance of fossils, a record of so many generations of snails living their snail-lives in a world where people didn’t even exist. It’s like looking into time itself, an awakening perspective on where seemingly-vast personal dramas really stand in relation to all the worlds existing in time and space. And each little snail is such so wonderful!

I placed a special order for some crystals with Julie for my niece who graduated with a BSc. in Marine Biology. Julie was so responsive and helpful in creating a beautiful and unique collection for my niece. She even went out to the ocean to see what “gift” the ocean would provide and sent along a lovely piece of coral as well. Julie is very knowledgeable and the crystals are gorgeous – with most included that I would not have thought of! She also put in detailed descriptions of each crystal. You cannot go wrong! Julie is so passionate about her work and it shows from every angle! Thank you, Julie for your kindness, thoroughness and patience — and for your huge collection of amazing crystals!
