Supply Chain for Unakite

This Unakite comes from a mine in Ontario, Canada. The exact mine is unknown, but Canada is one of the few countries that has adopted environmentally-friendly and sustainable mining practices. Canada has one of the safest mining standards in the world.

This gem dealer is a family business in the USA. It is run by two brothers who visit mines around the world. In some locations, they polish the rough stones in the same country as the mine. In other cases, they export the rough stones and have them polished in China. They also have dozens of employees who help them in their USA warehouse and at gem shows around the country.

I first encountered this supplier at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show. They carry a variety of polished stones, both common and rare. The family is originally from Pakistan and helped introduce K2 Azurite to the international market. When I first saw K2 I knew it was real, but didn’t know what it was and so approached one of the owners. He and I had an instant rapport.

Years later, we greet with a hug and he expects me to have questions about all his new stock. He tells me, with justifiable pride, about all the improvements he’s made to his business since we last spoke. In 2019, this source began to label all their stones with country-of-origin. When I asked him why, he told me that he listens to his customers and that I kept asking him where all the stones come from.

Unakite Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published February 2015  •  Updated August 2024  •  Read Time: 5 minutes
Unakite is a mixture of pink Feldspar and green Epidote with a little bit of Clear Quartz.  It is a igneous rock that has partially metamorphized.  Unakite was first found in the Unakas Mountains of North Carolina, USA.  That mountain range is mostly protected now by forest preserves and so mining is limited.  Happily this lovely stone can also be found in a few other locations.  Unakite is a stone of practicality and patience, that celebrates new beginnings.  It reminds us that big changes often takes time and work and that we cannot rush the process just by wishing.  Unakite is a great choice for labor and delivery, as well as for anyone in the midst of a big project.
