Ethically Sourced Watermelon Tourmaline

Know where your crystals come from

This Watermelon Tourmaline comes from small-scale mines in Minas Giras, Brazil. These mines have a low environmental impact.

This lapidary hand-polishes stones in Mumbai, India. It is owned by two long-time friends and business partners. Unusual for India, factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. It is also an exporter and sells exclusively at large gem shows.

I first met this source at the 2017 Denver Gem Show. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget, but their polished stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later, we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to visit them at the beginning of the show!

In 2019, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most lapidaries, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they ensure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma, and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation made me eager to develop and deepen this relationship.

Watermelon Tourmaline Healing, Mineralogy, and History

Published December 2014  •  Updated October 2022  •  Read Time: 7 minutes
Watermelon Tourmaline is a rare variety of bicolored Elbaite Tourmaline.  It is always green and red/pink.  Ideally, it should have a pink interior with a ring ring around it.  When sawed into think cross-sections, it looks just like the delicious fruit.  The color on the inside or bottom of the crystal is the older material, while the part on the outside or top is the younger material.  Most of the Watermelon Tourmaline on the market comes from Brazil.  It has one of the sweetest crystal energies imaginable.  It encourages us to live from the heart and to love generously in every connection, be it family, friend, lover or a new person we have just met.
