The yellow opal is nicely yellow and super opally. The translucency and shape are super nice and it certainly has the creativity energy I asked for. It’s probably the highest quality opal in my collection.

Ethically Sourced

Yellow Opal from Tanzania

This Yellow Opal comes from artisanal miners in Tanzania. The exact location is unknown, but it is likely in the Kigoma Region.  These Opals are mined by hand and would have a  low environmental impact.

This lapidary drum tumbles stones in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a family business, founded by a father and passed on to his sons. Factory workers have safe conditions and are paid fairly. The lapidary sells primarily at two gemshows, one in the United States and the other in France.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.

The current owners personally visit many small and large mines. To connect with artisanal miners in sub-Sahara Africa, they work with local Gem Dealers who travel far into the bush to buy from part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.

Yellow Opals are also nicknamed Canary Opals.  This nickname has a double-meaning, because canaries are yellow birds and Yellow Opal also comes from the Canary Islands!  They are usually common Opals without the glittery iridescent of Precious Opals, but sometimes a white Precious Opal can be found with happy golden sparkles.  Yellow Opal has an exceptionally joyful energy.  It invites us to dance with the Divine and to have an optimistic view of the world and ourselves.  It is also one of the most sensual and creative stones, making it a fabulous choice for lovers, artists and anyone who believes – if you’ve got it baby, flaunt it! The yellow opal is beautiful, and I love the internal banding you can see when it is held up to the light. Plus, I always find opals feel wonderful to the touch.

  13. Beth S. (Kentucky) (verified owner)

The Yellow Opal has a warm, strong energy that attracts me to hold it. I just seem to want it in direct contact with my skin. Its soft, yellow translucence may not be a fire opal but it has little glimmers of light inside it. After carrying it with me all day I slept with it not under my pillow but in my hand, where it stayed all night and my dreams had a more than usual vividness, color and texture.
