Ruby Zoisite is a fantastic fusion of brilliant red Ruby with vivid green Zoisite that helps us live with joy and gratitude.  This unique rock is found only in small-scale mines in Tanzania.  A few Rubies are precious enough for the fine jewelry industry, but most are opaque and so better suited for the collector’s market.  This pretty gem can take a beautiful polish and can be intricately carved.  The best sculptures take advantage of the contrasting colors creating one-of-a-kind pieces.  Energetically, it is heart-centered and hopeful.  It is an extremely comforting stone to work when grieving a loved one’s death or when fearful for one’s own mortality.

Where does Ruby Zoisite come from?

Ruby combinations can be found anywhere Rubies grow.  This particular variety of Rubies mixed with green Zoisite is found only in Tanzania.

Mining and Treatments

Pure Ruby is often mined at a secondary deposit in the gravel beds of rivers.  By contrast, Ruby combination stones are typically mined at the primary location and removed directly from the bedrock.  The mines are artisanal tunnels and shafts.  Some of the Rubies found in the mine are gem-quality and removed from the matrix rock, others aren’t and so are left in the Zoisite matrix.  They are completely natural, enhanced only by cutting and polishing.

The Environmental & Social Impact of Crystals

Your crystals should have a healing energy that is clean, powerful, & makes a positive difference.

Mineral Family

Ruby combinations are not a single mineral, but rather a rock. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock!  In this case the two main minerals are red Rubies and green Zoisite.  There are often black dots and streaks of Hornblende minerals such as Pargasite or Tschermakite

Ruby Zoisite Formation and Crystal Associates

Ruby combinations are metamorphic rocks created by regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration. Rubies and Zoisite are both formed during the metamorphic process, and in rare cases may naturally fuse together into a single stone. Regional metamorphism occurs when there is a collision between tectonic plates, causing geological changes over a large area. Hydrothermal alteration happens when underground water is heated up to incredibly high temperatures. The hot water flows through minerals, leaving traces of other minerals in its wake, which can then grow in combination over time.

History of Ruby Zoisite

Ruby always grows entwined with other minerals.  When the Ruby is a transparent gem, it is carefully cut away from the matrix and sold to the fine jewelry industry.  But sometimes the Ruby is opaque and the matrix is pretty, and so these stones are polished and carved for jewelry, talismans, and decorative purposes.  Ruby combination stones can be appreciated by anyone who loves beauty and the finer things.  But the largest market for these Ruby combination stones is the metaphysical industry which appreciates not only their coloring, but also their energy and affordable price point.

The first Ruby combination stones sold on the market were Ruby Zoisite from Tanzania and Ruby Kyanite from India.  It’s not clear which one was first, but both had entered the market by the late 20th century and are mentioned in the modern lapidary classic,  Love is in the Earth (1995).  The Tanzanian gems were often exported to India and Indian lapidaries it in into hearts, wands, skulls, pyramids, spheres and every other shape imaginable.  Because the Rubies are more distinct in Zoisite than they are in many other Ruby combination, sculptures can make incredible one-of-a-kind sculptures that play on the visual difference between the bright red Rubies and the vivid green Zoisite.
