Thulite is the pink variety of Zoisite.  It was first discovered in gravel mine in Norway, but only became popular after a highway was built through the area.  The gems are also found in southern Africa and in the United States, with each deposit having a slightly different shade of pink.  Thulite is a fabulous stone for cultivating self-love and self-care.  It reminds us that self-care is much more than just relaxing or indulging.  True self-care includes every act of kindness and wisdom that improve our life.  Thulite also encourages romance and intimacy.  It is a great talisman for attracting and nurturing a life partnership based on love and respect.

Mineral Family

Thulite is the pink variety of Zoisite, a Sorosilicate mineral. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Zoisites belongs to the sorosilicate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule.

Thulite’s energy works well with its family – other sorosilicate minerals.  Try it in combination with Danburite, DragonstoneEpidote, and Idocrase.  It also works well with other colors of Zoisite including green Zoisite, Ruby Zoisite and Tanzanite.

Thulite Formation and Crystal Associates

Thulite is formed by regional metamorphism and by the hydrothermal alteration of igneous rocks. It is sometimes found in Quartz veins and pegmites.  Its pink color comes from manganese.

Thulite’s energy works well with its “friends” – crystal associates formed in the same geological environment.  Try it in combination with Blue Fluorite and Grossular Garnet

History of Thulite

Thulite is a relatively “new” crystal to the metaphysical community and so was not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe crystals and their powers. Thulite was first documented in 1820 in the small village of Sauland, Norway. It was found in a gravel mine located between two small farms. There are no known legends directly associated with this stone, and its healing properties are still being explored.

Thulite was named after Thule, a legendary place in the far north of Europe, beyond the borders of the known world. Sometimes depicted as an island, it was listed on medieval maps as Ultima Thule, Latin for “Furthest Island.” Thule has been variously linked to Greenland, Iceland, Orkney Islands, Norway, and Shetland Islands, as well as other remote locations.

References to Thule date as far back as the ancient Greek geography, On the Ocean, written by Pytheas and describing his travels in 330-320 BCE. Thule was later referenced by virtually every major ancient and medieval geographer. Today, Thule lends its name to several locations in Greenland, Iceland, the Sandwich Islands, Scotland, as well as a section of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, USA. In addition to having the stone, Thulite, named after it, Thule also gave its name to Thulium, a rare and expensive element, occupying the 69th position on the Periodic Table.
