Mineralogy of Pyrite
Mineral Family: Sulfates
Chemical Composition: FeS2
Color: Brass yellow, gray-yellow
Crystal System: Cubic
Form/Habit: Cubic, octaheral, pryitohedral
Location: Pyrite deposits are found worldwide. Some of the most important deposits are in Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and the United States (California, Colorado, Tennessee, and Virginia).
Mineral Family: Pyrite is a type of Sulfide, minerals in which sulfur has been combined with one or more metals. They tend to have simple structures and often have a metallic luster.
Formation: Like other Sulfides, Pyrite can occur in all rock types. It is created when Iron molecules bond with water. When found in igneous or metamorphic rocks, Pyrite forms in concentrations inside veins and fractures. When found in sedimentary rocks its is loosely disseminated.
Mining: Sulfide minerals are the most common ore minerals for most commercially mined metals including Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Copper. Pyrite is commonly mined alongside these more precious metals.
Enhancements: All Pyrites are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing. Pyrite is sometimes falsely advertised as Marcasite, which has a similar appearance but is an entirely different mineral.
Synonyms: Fool’s Gold
History of African Gold
African Gold is a relatively “new” stone on the market, and has been called by many names including Pyrite, Healer’s Stone and even Apache Gold (this last name actually refers to an entirely different type of Pyrite stone, which is gold and white, rather than gold and black). African Gold is not included any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.
It was originally discovered in South African Gold Mines located in the Witwatersrand Basin. Pyrite is a common ore stone for precious Gold, and so is commonly mined as a secondary stone. One interesting deposit had the Pyrite in a matrix of grey/black Agate. This stone became known as “African Gold.” For many years, this was the only source for the stone, but a similar deposit in Peru has recently been discovered. Despite the fact that the stones are literally from South America, “African Gold” remains the official name.

Safe Handling of African Gold Pyrite
African Gold Pyrite is a Copper-derived mineral and as such should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “African Gold Pyrite Water” for drinking or bathing. Having too much Copper in the body is toxic, and drinking direct-infusion elixirs of Copper-derived stones is dangerous. This is especially true if the water is hot. You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.
African Gold Pyrite is a sturdy little stone that can be carried around in a typical pocket or medicine bag without chipping.
African Gold Pyrite can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
African Gold Pyrite can be energetically cleansed using any method, including but not limited to: fresh or salt water (if using salt water, be sure to rinse the stone off afterwards in freshwater to remove the salt!); sunlight or moonlight; smudging with smoke (typically sage), etc. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
African Gold Pyrites can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing their color. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

These African Gold Pyrites were mined and tumbled in South Africa.
I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful African Gold Pyrite for you.
This price is for one stone.
You can buy a single tumbled African Gold Pyrite or several, depending on your individual needs. Each African Gold Pyrite measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.
The stone I choose for you will be smooth, chunky, and free of chips with a visually pleasing pattern of golden Pyrite with black Agate crackles. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their unique appearance and clean energies, these tumbled African Gold Pyrites are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
