Mineralogy of Astrophyllite
Mineral Family: Metamorphic Rock
Chemical Composition: Varies
Color: Brown, black
Crystal System: Orthorhombic
Fracture: Uneven, brittle
Luster: Submetallic to pearly
Streak: Varies, most often yellow
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: The most important deposits are in Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia, and the United States (Arkansas, Colorado, and Washington).
Mineral Family: Astrophyllite is not a mineral, but rather a type of metamorphic rock. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! Astrophyllite is composed mainly of Anthophyllite and Gedrite, along with other minor mineral inclusions.
Formation: Metamorphic rocks are created when an existing Igneous or Sedimentary rock (or potentially another type of Metamorphic rock!) is subjected to new pressures and high temperatures. This causes the atoms and molecules to rearrange themselves into new minerals while still in a hard solid state. Astrophyllite was believed to have been formed from an existing Igneous rock over 2800 million years ago, which then underwent a second metamorphic process 2500 million years ago.
Mining: Astrophyllite is mined at its primary deposit. Astrophyllite often occurs in conjunction with Garnets, Kyanite, and Sapphire. The majority of the Astrophyllite on the market today comes from the Kola Peninsula, Russia.
Enhancements: All varieties of Astrophyllite are completely natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Astrophyllite
Astrophyllite was first described in 1854 after being discovered on Laven Island, Norway. Its name comes from the Greek astron, meaning “star” and phyllon meaning “leaf,” due to the fact that when it cleaves, it forms thin, brittle leaves with an iridescent flash. The original Astrophyllite was of the golden-brown variety and had a bronze flash.
Astrophyllite was later determined to be geologically identical to Nuummite, which was first described in 1810 near Nuuk, Greenland. Both of these rare metamorphic rocks combine Anthophyllite and Gedrite, along with other minor minerals, into a beautiful iridescent stone.
Legally, the name “Nuummite” is only used for stones mined near Nuuk, Greenland, which are most often black with a bronze “flash.” All other localities outside of Nuuk use the more generic name of “Astrophyllite,” regardless of the principle color or flash. Astrophyllites can be black or brown, and flash in a wide variety of colors depending on which minor minerals are incorporated, although bronze and blue flashes are most common. Astrophyllite which comes from Norway and Pikes Peak, Colorado tends to be brown with bronze flash. By contrast, most of the Astrophyllite currently on the market comes from the Kola Peninsula in Russia, and is black with a blue flash.

Healing Properties of Astrophyllite
Spiritual: Astrophyllite is a beautiful stone to help us explore those things which exist beyond what can be perceived with our physical senses. It can teach us how to communicate with inter-dimensional beings and extraterrestrials. It can also show us how to “time travel” during meditation, to access the knowledge of past and future civilizations. Astrophyllite links the Root and Third Eye Chakras, is attuned to Scorpio and the elements of Storm, and vibrates to the number 9.
Emotional: Astrophyllite helps us to see the possibilities of each situation. In particular, it coaxes us to recognize that if “one door closes,” another door (or window!) is open for us to go through. Moreover, Astrophyllite encourages us to see outside the box, and to dare to walk our own way. Astrophyllite has a warm energy, reminding us that all things, including ourselves, were once star dust. And since we have that common origin, all beings, including humans, animals, plants, and minerals, are therefore intimately connected. This feeling of interconnectedness is a great gift, and brings with it feelings of hope, faith, and harmony.
Mental: Astrophyllite is a wonderful stone for anyone engaged in shadow work. It helps us to see our darker aspects in their proper context. Rather than being inherently “negative,” our Shadow Sides are an integral part of who we are. By accepting both our Light and Dark sides, we become whole, and from this place of wholeness find our greatest peace and serenity.
Physical: Astrophyllite is believed to offer protection from electromagnetic waves and radiation. As a result, it is commonly used by metaphysical healers to protect against and treat the negative effects of chemotherapy, as used to fight cancer. Astrophyllite is said to help the body detox and is also used to regulate the nervous system. It is also believed to enhance brain function, and is said to be particularly good for helping learn new languages or re-learn language skills following a stroke.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Earth to Pocket
Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.
These Astrophyllites were mined on the Kola Penninsula in northwestern Russia, tumbled in China, and brought to the United States by a wholesale company.
I originally found the US wholesale company while searching for a source for Black Tourmaline and Nephrite Jade. After making an initial purchase, I was immediately impressed by their quality. This company provides wonderful customer service and I often call them to ask questions about various minerals, or even to share with them things which I have learned! The combination of high quality stones, affordable prices, and knowledgeable staff makes me happy to do business with them.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Astrophyllite for you.
You can buy a single Astrophyllite or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Astrophyllite measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.
The stone I choose for you will be a beautiful dark black stone with a metallic or blue shimmer. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their subtle shimmer and clean energies, these Astrophyllite are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket
