Mineral Family: Auralite 23 is a unique type of Amethyst found in Canada. Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral, and belongs to the same family as Clear Quartz, Citrine, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz and Prasiolite. While Amethyst is the main mineral in Auralite 23, as the name indicates there can be up to 23 distinct minerals found as inclusions within this stone, making it more of a “rock” rather than a mineral. The average Auralite 23 crystal contains anywhere from 4-17 of the following minerals: Ajoite, Bronite, Cacoxenite, Chalcopyrite, Copper, Covellite, Epidote, Geothite, Gilalite, Gold, Hematite, Iron, Lepidocrosite, Limonite, Magnetite, Nickel, Platinum, Pyrite, Pyrolusite, Rutile, Shpalerite, Silver, and Titanite.
Formation: Normally Amethyst is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid gives Amethyst its purple color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. In the case of Auralite 23, additional traces of elements and minerals were floating in the silica acid and solidify within the Amethyst crystal.
Mining: Auralite 23 Amethyst is mined in exclusively in mines within the Boreal Forest near Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada. Most mines are small operations, the owners often mine the minerals by hand.
Enhancements: Lab-created Amethyst is widely available in the fine gemstone market and is primarily used for jewelry. However, most other Amethysts, including Auralite 23, may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
*The mineralogy information is based on pure Amethyst. Depending on the type and location of the minor inclusions, individual stones may differ slightly.
History of Auralite 23 Amethyst
Auralite 23 Amethyst is a new crystal for the metaphysical community and as such was not included in any of the ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. It may be included in some of the newest lapidaries. It’s energy was first widely described by Robert Simmons. Auralite 23 is primarily composed of purple Amethyst, with noticeable inclusions of red Hematite. It often occurs with beautiful chevron patterns.
Auralite 23 is mined near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, a district which has long produced beautiful Amethyst and Hematite specimens. According to some metaphysical sources, meteorites may have hit the area around Thunder Bay just prior to the Auralite 23’s creation, thus accounting for the unusually high amount of trace metals in the crystals. Unfortunately, this claim is not backed up by any clear scientific evidence.
Intriguingly, Auralite 23 Amethyst crystals have been successfully dated to as far back as 1.2 billion years ago. This makes them them one of the oldest gemstones available on the market! That dating means that these crystals would have formed around the same time that sexual reproduction was first documented in the fossil record, resulting in an evolutionary explosion among living creatures.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
