Mineralogy of Azurite-Malachite
Color: Blue and Green
Streak: Blue or green
Location: While both Azurite and Malachite are found in small amounts in Copper mines worldwide, good Azurite-Malachite specimens are rare and are mostly found in the Southwestern United States. Azurite-Malachite has also been found in Australia, Chile, France, Morocco, Namibia, and Russia.
Rock Type: Azurite-Malachite is a combination of two Carbonate minerals. Carbonates are an important part of the Earth’s crust and are found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Carbonates are minerals which contain the carbonate group CO3 as their basic structural unit. They form in a trigonal system with one Carbon atom centrally located between 3 Oxygen atoms. While there are over 70 types of Carbonate minerals, the most common are Dolomite, Siderite, and Calcite, while some rare but well known Carbonates include Aragonite, Magnesite and Rhodochrosite. Azurite is an indigo blue Carbonate, while Malachite is vivid green.
Formation: Azurite-Malachite is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients such as flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Azurite-Malachite, it is a combination of two Copper minerals. Copper typically forms as a sulphide, which oxidizes when exposed to water. If that water also contains carbonic acid, it dissolves the copper and forms new compounds, including green Malachite and blue Azurite. If the stone forms as thin layers, one mineral on top of the other, it is considered a Sedimentary rock. If the two minerals are mixed together more randomly, it is considered a metamorphic rock.
Mining: Typically mined in Copper quarries and in relationship to their primary stone. Azurite-Malachite be found as rounded nodules, stalactites, and, rarely, encrusted slabs.
Enhancements: All Azurite-Malachites are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Azurmalachite, Bluebird

Emotional: Azurite-Malachite encourages us to be more curious, a phenomenon with inherently reduces anxiety and makes us less egotistical. It helps us to see other people in a kind light, recognizing the good they do or at least the interesting thoughts they provoke! Azurite-Malachite increases our self-confidence and our ability to understand our own emotions, including suppressed emotions. It can also help us to identify our emotional triggers and understand how to better deal with them. Azurite-Malachite inspires us to be more curious and to follow our thoughts all the way to their logical end, rather than making assumptions based on old data. It celebrates intelligence and rationality, and encourages us to follow paths of compassion, harmony, and kindness.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
