Healing Properties of Blue Coral
Spiritual: Blue Coral invites us to explore our true selves deeply and honestly, without false humility or blustering ego. It dares us to claim our most authentic spiritual and personal power and to strive for improvement in every aspect of our lives. Blue Coral teaches us that when we are strong and independent we are also in the best position to serve others. It shows us that, as a result of this strength, we are able to create a healthy interdependence, much like how a Coral Reef creates a vibrant ecosystem. It brings light to the Third Eye, strengthening our natural psychic gifts. Blue Coral is attuned to the Root, Sacral, Throat, and Third Eye Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Sagittarius, Aquarius. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 8 and 22.
Emotional: Blue Coral soothes and quiets turbulent emotions. It reminds us to breathe deeply and to step back and look at the situation logically and from a neutral mind. Blue Coral offers protection and healing from the ravages of depression and anxiety. It is a phenomenal tool to use when working on connecting First Chakra and Throat Chakra, allowing us to freely communicate about our most basic and necessary physical and emotional needs. Blue Coral also helps us to better relate to others, especially those who have dramatically different lives from our own.
Mental: Blue Coral has a unique energy that is both highly spiritual while also profoundly practical. This combined energy helps us to find balance in our own lives and to veer away from extreme actions and beliefs which do not serve us. Blue Coral helps us to be in touch with and trust our inherent common sense and to put that sense into action. It encourages us to routinely check in with ourselves to be sure that our thoughts, words, and actions are consistent with our values. Taking it a step further, we are asked to check to make sure our values are in alignment with the Highest Good of all beings and our planet. Blue Coral is also particularly good for anyone who is seeking to balance the pursuit of financial goals while staying true to any spiritual or emotional goals.
Physical: Blue Coral is said to help treat a variety of throat conditions, both minor and major. It is also believed to strengthen and rebuild the liver and the circulatory system. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to treat the pituitary and pineal glands.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Blue Coral
Mineral Family: Organic Gem
Chemical Composition: CaCO3
Crystal System: Trigonal, orthorhombic, amorphous
Luminescense: Varies by species
Luster: Dull to Vitreous
Location: The species of Coral most commonly called “Blue Coral” is Heliopora coerulea. It has a large range, but like all other Coral species is increasingly endangered due to the global destruction of reefs. It is widely found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with the largest known colony located off southeastern Japan. Increasingly, ornamental Corals on the market are grown in aquacultures, or Coral farms. Most Coral farmed for commercial purposes is grown in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mineral Family: Blue Coral is not a mineral at all, but rather the dried remains of Heliopora coerulea and several related species of marine Corals. When dried, this bright blue Coral has an unusually hard shape which has been used to make jewelry for centuries. Live Coral is often venomous and so care should be taken if using Coral for healing purposes.
Formation: Blue Coral is a living creature which grows on rocky sea bottoms with low sedimentation. Blue Coral grows in relatively shallow water, around 6 feet (2 meters) below the surface of the Ocean, making it particularly vulnerable to pollution, harmful fishing practices, and climate change.
Mining: These Blue Corals were grown in an Aquaculture, rather than harvested from the wild. Aquaculture is an underwater form of agriculture, also known as Coral farming or Coral gardening. The Corals are grown in nurseries for the specific purpose of supplying the live Coral and ornamental Coral trades. Aquaculture is more than just a financial farming practice, it is also instrumental for teaching us how best to grow, maintain, and help preserve wild corals.
Enhancements: All tumbled Coral on the market is fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Blue Coral
Coral is not a mineral or a plant, but rather a marine invertebrate which typically lives in compact colonies. There are over 2,500 known species of Coral. Of them, approximately half secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard exterior skeleton, which under the right circumstances can be dried and preserved. These Corals form Coral Reefs, the most bio-diverse habitats on the planet. The other half are “soft” Corals that can bend and move with the oceanic currents. Heliopora coerulea (Blue Coral) is a hard Coral whose exterior skeleton is often an unremarkable shade of tan-brown or grey-green. However, the dull exterior skeleton masks a bright blue interior skeleton which gets its color by extracting Iron from the ocean waters.
The largest Blue Coral Reef in the world is located off the Ryukyu Island chain in southeastern Japan. It is 1.8 miles (3 km) long and is growing approximately 1 cm a year. Based on its current size the Ryukyu Reef is believed to be a little over 1000 years old. While in some areas the Blue Coral remains healthy and vibrant, in other areas the Coral is bleached white, the sign of a dead and dying reef. Ryukyu Reef, and all other Coral Reefs worldwide, are dying as a result of pollution, Global Warming, and the over-fishing of large fish species (large fish check the population size of tiny coral-eating fish). While many dedicated scientists and environmentalists are doing what they can to rehabilitate these reefs, without a global response to the situation, saving these reefs is a daunting process.
Coral was included in many early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. Corallium rubrum (Red Coral), which lives in the Mediterranean Sea, was particularly prized and widely described in ancient and medieval European lapidaries.

These tumbled Blue Corals were grown and tumbled in Hong Kong.
I first met the Hong Kong tumbling company at the 2014 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Despite their beautiful tumbled stones, I was reluctant at first to buy from them. A particular concern was their tumbled Coral, which I feared was illegally harvested from the wild. When I asked them, they told me their Coral was actually grown in an aquaculture (for more information about aquaculture, see the Mineralogy tab). After our conversation, I purchased from the tumbling company with confidence.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Blue Coral for you.
This price is for one stone.
You can buy a single Blue Coral or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Blue Coral measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their natural beauty.
The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips and cracks, and be a round blue with soft, organic patterns. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their distinctive pattern and clean energies, these Blue Coral are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
