Location: While Amethyst and Smoky Quartz are found in numerous locations around the world, Brandberg Amethyst is found exclusively in Namibia.
Mineral Family: Brandberg Amethyst is a unique type of Chevron Amethyst found in Namibia. While most Chevron Amethyst only combine purple Amethyst and white Snow Quartz, Brandberg Amethyst combines purple Amethyst, grey Smoky Quartz and Clear Quartz. Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral, and belongs to the same family as Clear Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Citrine, Rose Quartz, and Prasiolite.
Formation: All varieties of Quartz are created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid gives Amethyst its purple color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. Brandberg, and other forms of Chevron Amethyst, are created when a single bubble cools down at various rates, resulting in varying shades of purple. Bubbles which contain smaller levels of iron produce Amethysts with Clear Quartz and Snow Quartz stratification. If Amethyst is naturally irridatated, it will turn grey and become Smoky Quartz. Brandberg Amethyst is unique in that crystals are partially purple Amethyst and partially grey Smoky Quartz.
Mining: Brandberg Amethyst is mined in the Goboboseb Mountains, in the Brandberg area of western Namibia. The crystals are mined by hand, in small claims near the surface of the earth.
Enhancements: Lab-created Amethyst is widely available in the fine gemstone market and is primarily used for jewelry. However, most other Amethysts, including Brandberg Amethyst, may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Brandberg Amethyst
Brandberg Amethyst is a new crystal for the metaphysical community and as such was not included in any of the ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. It may be included in some of the newest lapidaries. It is a unique gemstone that beautifully combines purple Amethyst, grey Smoky Quartz, and Clear Quartz.
Most sources claim that Brandberg Amethyst is mined on the Brandberg, Namibia’s tallest mountain, whose name in the local languages translates to “Fire Mountain” or “The Mountain of the Gods”. The Brandberg is a holy site for the local San (Bushmen) people and is famous for its ancient rock art. Its distinct dome can be seen for many miles across the desert, and when viewed from space forms a perfect circle. From a metaphysical perspective, an Amethyst from this mountain would be a rare treat indeed! But in fact, the mountain is so well respected in the region, that it is illegal to mine there.
Brandberg Amethysts and other varieties of Quartz are actually mined in the Goboboseb mountains, located approximately 35 km away from the Brandberg. The Gobobseb Mountains and the Brandberg are part of the same mountain range, composed mainly of granite and basalt. They formed approximately 132-135 million years ago, around the same time that the massive super-continent Pangea broke up.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.
The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
