Mineral Family: Brandberg Amethyst is a unique type of Chevron Amethyst found in Namibia.  While most Chevron Amethyst only combine purple Amethyst and white Snow Quartz, Brandberg Amethyst combines purple Amethyst, grey Smoky Quartz and Clear Quartz.  Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral, and belongs to the same family as Clear Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Citrine, Rose Quartz, and Prasiolite.

Formation: All varieties of Quartz are created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of iron within the silica acid gives Amethyst its purple color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. Brandberg, and other forms of Chevron Amethyst, are created when a single bubble cools down at various rates, resulting in varying shades of purple. Bubbles which contain smaller levels of iron produce Amethysts with Clear Quartz and Snow Quartz stratification.  If Amethyst is naturally irridatated, it will turn grey and become Smoky Quartz.  Brandberg Amethyst is unique in that crystals are partially purple Amethyst and partially grey Smoky Quartz.

Mining: Brandberg Amethyst is mined in the Goboboseb Mountains, in the Brandberg area of western Namibia.  The crystals are mined by hand, in small claims near the surface of the earth.

Enhancements: Lab-created Amethyst is widely available in the fine gemstone market and is primarily used for jewelry. However, most other Amethysts, including Brandberg Amethyst, may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Brandberg Amethyst

Brandberg Amethyst is a new crystal for the metaphysical community and as such was not included in any of the ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers.  It may be included in some of the newest lapidaries.  It is a unique gemstone that beautifully combines purple Amethyst, grey Smoky Quartz, and Clear Quartz.

Most sources claim that Brandberg Amethyst is mined on the Brandberg, Namibia’s tallest mountain, whose name in the local languages translates to “Fire Mountain” or “The Mountain of the Gods”.  The Brandberg is a holy site for the local San (Bushmen) people and is famous for its ancient rock art.  Its distinct dome can be seen for many miles across the desert, and when viewed from space forms a perfect circle.  From a metaphysical perspective, an Amethyst from this mountain would be a rare treat indeed! But in fact, the mountain is so well respected in the region, that it is illegal to mine there.

Brandberg Amethysts and other varieties of Quartz are actually mined in the Goboboseb mountains, located approximately 35 km away from the Brandberg.  The Gobobseb Mountains and the Brandberg are part of the same mountain range, composed mainly of granite and basalt.  They formed approximately 132-135 million years ago, around the same time that the massive super-continent Pangea broke up.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These Brandberg Amethyst were mined in Namibia and tumbled in South Africa.

I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Brandberg Amethyst for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone. You can buy a single Brandberg Amethyst or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Brandberg Amethyst measures at least 1 inch at its longest length and have a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips and be a beautiful translucent tumbled stone in varying shades of purple Amethyst, brown/grey Smoky Quartz and colorless Clear Quartz. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their beautiful color and clean energies, these Brandberg Amethysts are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

Safe Handling of Brandberg Amethyst

Brandberg Amethyst will gradually lose its color over time if left in direct sunlight. It is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

Good To Know:

Brandberg Amethyst are physically durable stones. As long as they are rounded and without thin edges, they can be carried in a pocket or medicine bag, or worn as jewelry on an everyday basis, without significant danger of the stone chipping or breaking.

Brandberg Amethyst can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.

Brandberg Amethyst can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.

Tumbled and fully smooth Brandberg Amethyst can be safely used to make direct-infusion “Brandberg Amethyst Water” for drinking or bathing. Before making any direct-infusion elixir ALWAYS check the mineralogical properties of the stone to ensure it is not toxic. Only use fully tumbled stones or natural Quartz points in direct-infusion elixirs, never rough stones. When in doubt, make an indirect-infusion elixir instead.
