Mineralogy of Buddstone
Location: Buddstone is found exclusively in South Africa.
Rock Type: Buddstone is not a mineral, but rather a type of metamorphic rock. In order to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! Buddstone is metamorphosed Chert, a fine grained sedimentary rock which comes in many colors, but is most commonly grey or brown. Buddstone gets its beautiful green color from inclusions of various green minerals such as Chlorite, Epidot, and Fuchsite. While sometimes referred to as a type of “Jade,” Buddstone is only distantly related to the Jade family. It is more closely related to Serpentine and Fuchsite. Buddstone is sometimes incorrectly referred to as “Verdite” which is a type of Fuchsite. True Verdite is pure green, while Buddstone is softly molted apple green, white, brown and other colors.
Formation: Metamorphic rocks are created when an existing Igneous or Sedimentary rock (or potentially another type of Metamorphic rock!) is subjected to new pressures and high temperatures. This causes the atoms and molecules to rearrange themselves into new minerals while still in a hard solid state.
Mining: The majority of Buddstone on the market was mined in association with Verdite. Both green stones are a by-product of the Gold and Garnet mining industries.
Enhancements: All Buddstones are completely natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Budstone, African Jade, South African Jade, Transvaal Jade, and Praetorianite.
History of Buddstone
Buddstone was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Buddstone is found exclusively in South Africa, alongside deposits for Verdite. Both of these soft green metamorphic rocks can be easily carved and so were used to make ornaments and amulets by indigenous tribes. Whether these carvings were purely ornamental, or had a deeper spiritual meaning is unknown.

Healing Properties of Buddstone
Spiritual: Buddstone offers us the wisdom of our ancestors and gives us the strength and fortitude to use this wisdom in the modern world. It can also help us to better understand our own distinct family line, cultural habits, and belief systems. Buddstone encourages us to look more closely at our own beliefs with discernment and compassion, and to choose only those beliefs which best serve us and the Greater Good. Buddstone can also be used to activate the Kundalini Spirit and help it to rise to the heart level. Buddstone is attuned to the Heart Chakra and linked to the astrological sign of Taurus. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 2.
Emotional: Buddstone has a very calming and soothing energy which helps us to feel safe enough to do our emotional “work.” It encourages us to acknowledge our own rough spots and edges, and to actively work to smooth and polish them. Such work is done for our own sake, in order to become more emotionally mature and better able to hand the twists and turns of life with grace and dignity. Buddstone reminds us that when we have a steady emotional foundation to build upon, it is easy to accomplish great things.
Mental: Buddstone is a fantastic stone for anyone who needs to be more organized and focused. It shows us the quickest and most direct path to any solution, making it a valuable tool for resolving complicated problems. Buddstone encourages discernment and cooperation. It can help us to see commonalities and differences between groups of people and ideas, allowing us to more effectively work with them for the highest possible mutual benefit. Buddstone would be a beautiful talisman stone for anyone who is involved in a nonprofit organization.
Physical: Buddstone has been used by metaphysical healers to treat the physical heart and circulatory system problems. It is most often used to increase the flow of energy throughout the body.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Earth to Pocket
Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.
This stone was mined and tumbled in South Africa.
I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Buddstone for you.
This price is for one stone.
You can buy a single Buddstone or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Buddstone measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.
The stone I choose for you will have an Apple Green color with occasional grey or pale yellow inclusions. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their soft silky texture and clean energies, these Buddstones are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
