Healing Properties of Burnt Citrine
Spiritual: Burnt Citrine is an incredibly strong crystal for manifestation, helping us to clearly define our dreams, figure out the necessary steps to take, and then start our journey! It encourages us to see that we are wonderful just as we are and that all of the powers of the Universe are ready to help us in our goals. Burnt Citrine has a lighter and more playful energy than Natural Citrine. When used with intention, it banishes feelings of heaviness and darkness from our spirit, replacing it with vibrant golden Light. Burnt Citrine is attuned to the Solar Plexus Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra. It is connected to the element of Fire and vibrates to the number 6.
Emotional: Burnt Citrine has one of the most joyful energies of any healing stone. It imparts confidence, courage, and hope; making it one of the very best stones to use to treat depression and anxiety. Burnt Citrine’s energy is exceptionally playful and can help us to stay in the present moment. It encourages us to stop taking ourselves so seriously and to realize life is meant to be enjoyed. Burnt Citrine may also provide us with extra emotional energy when we feel drained by difficult situations or people. Anyone who needs to set and maintain clear emotional boundaries will benefit enormously from Burnt Citrine. It helps us to see that it is okay to say “no” and also to be clear about what we WANT rather than merely focused on the minimum we NEED to survive. Burnt Citrine teaches us to be strong, independent, and dare to follow our bliss.
Mental: Burnt Citrine encourages us to think quickly, make good decisions, and put them into action. It helps us to rapidly digest complex information, particularly related to power, boundaries, and manifestation. Burnt Citrine encourages a lifelong love of learning and boundless curiosity. It also gives us greater confidence in our abilities to find answers to questions. Burnt Citrine can also help us to understand and move past any mental blocks dealing with money. It helps us to let go of feelings of being “undeserving” or the erroneous belief that money is “evil.” Instead, Burnt Citrine shows us that money buys marshmallows and builds hospitals, and can therefore be considered a “good thing” worthy of being gathered, saved, spent, and enjoyed.
Physical: Burnt Citrine has been used to treat the stomach, spleen, and pancreas and is said to promote digestion. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to speed up metabolism and increase energy levels to encourage weight loss.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Burnt Citrine
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/trigonal
Form/Habit: Pyramidal terminations, prismatic
Fracture: Conchoidal, very brittle
Location: The most important natural Citrine deposits are in Madagascar. Additional Citrine deposits are located in Argentina, Brazil. France, Hungary, Myanmar (Burma), Namibia, Russia, Scotland, Spain, and the United States.
Mineral Family: Citrine is a yellow variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. The most highly prized variety of all is Amethyst, or purple Quartz. Yellow Quartz is Citrine.
Formation: Citrine is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rock. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of aluminum and lithium within the silica acid gives Citrine its yellow color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz. Chemically speaking, Citrine and Smoky Quartz are identical, the only difference is that Smoky Quartz have been irradiated.
Mining: Citrine is a highly desirable and relatively rare semi-precious stone. It is typically found near or within Amethyst mines, since the only chemical difference between the two stones is how quickly the silica acid cooled down!
Enhancements: While Citrine does occur naturally, the vast majority of Citrines are heat-treated Amethysts. More than 200 years ago, it was discovered that when Amethysts are carefully heated between 800 and 900 degrees Fahrenheit they take on a bright golden color. This discovery gave mines and gem dealers a a way to transform low grade Amethyst into a more desirable commodity. The difference between natural and burnt Citrine is obvious in tumbled stones. But for high quality gemstones, only a trained specialist can recognize the difference – Burnt Citrines have subtle stripes while Natural Citrines are slightly cloudy. Natural Citrine gets its pale golden color from minor inclusions of lithium and aluminum. By contrast, the bright yellow of Burnt Citrine comes from Iron.

I have been doing business with this source since 2014. They are the oldest tumbling company in the world and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The company started in California in the 1950s and was eventually bought by a British immigrant who had young sons. Eventually the company moved to South Africa in order to be closer to the source of their best-selling stone and to have the legal rights to export it. The company is now run by the sons and their childhood best friend.
The current owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women. Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I ask the owners directly. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of the stones I sell from sub-Sahara Africa.
