Healing Properties of Orange Calcite

Spiritual: Orange Calcite is a vibrant spiritual stone which encourages us to move beyond dreaming ideals and into actual living action. It is particularly good for anyone who is feeling “spiritually stuck” or needs to speed up their spiritual development. Orange Calcite gives us courage to actively command our will towards our Highest Good and away from the mundane. It reminds us that we are meant to do Great Things, each in our own unique way. Orange Calcite is attuned to the Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Cancer. It is connected to the element of Fire and vibrates to the number 8.

Emotional: Orange Calcite brings feelings of positivity and stability. It helps us to balance out extreme emotions and encourages us to be more self-confident and self-sufficient. Orange Calcite brings a gentle courage which allows us to better trust ourselves to do what is necessary for our own health and happiness. It combats depression and a tendency to isolate ourselves. Orange Calcite also reveals to us the importance of maintaining a good social support system and reveals ways in which we can build or strengthen our relationships with people.

Mental: Orange Calcite combats laziness – particularly mental laziness. It forces us to face the truth about ourselves and the situations we find ourselves in. Orange Calcite helps us to be more discerning in our thinking. It is particularly helpful for differentiating between “can’t”, “won’t,” and “don’t.” Each of these  words has a vastly different meaning and it is important to know which word is actually true for each situation. Standing in truth, we can then move forward in our lives with confidence and integrity. Orange Calcite is especially good for entrepreneurs or anyone in a leadership role who is required to be industrious and energetic and above all moving in the right direction.

Physical: Orange Calcite is said to encourage the healing and strengthening of bones and is said to be particularly good for fortifying the body against osteoporosis. It is most often used to stimulate the metabolism and fortify the immune system. It is also used to treat the sexual organs and digestive system.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Mineral Family: Orange Calcite is a Carbonate mineral. Carbonates are an important part of the Earth’s crust and are found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Carbonates are minerals which contain the carbonate group CO3 as their basic structural unit. They form in a trigonal system with one carbon atom centrally located between 3 oxygen atoms. While there are over 70 types of Carbonate minerals, the most common are Dolomite, Siderite, and Calcite.

Formation: Calcite is formed when liquid calcium, shell, coral, and algal debris settle onto the muddy bottom of a saltwater ocean or lake. From there they are gradually solidified into a single mass during diagenesis, the process of transforming loose sediment into a sedimentary rock. The resulting rock is typically Limestone, which is richly laced with small Calcite minerals. Later on, if the Limestone is subjected to heat and pressure it can become Marble, a metamorphic rock. The heat and pressure of the metamorphic process causes larger Calcite crystals to grow. In rare cases, Calcite may be found as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks alongside calcium-rich Feldspar.

Mining: Calcite is a principal crystal extracted in commercial Limestone mines. It is mined in shallow pits at the primary deposit where the Calcite still has its original relationship with the host rock. After being extracted, Calcite is sorted into different grades depending on color. From a commercial viewpoint, the best variety is pure white, which can be pulverized into a powder and used to make rubber, paint, cement, textile goods, and especially ceramics.

Enhancements: All Orange Calcite is natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Orange Calcite

Orange Calcite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Calcite is an extremely common and soft mineral which makes it an excellent choice for carving, both in ancient times and today. It is certainly possible that many of the carvings had healing and spiritual purposes.

Most Calcites are found in Limestone. In fact, the word “Calcite” comes from the Greek word chalix, meaning lime.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the Hong Kong tumbling company at the 2014 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.  A language barrier coupled with the quick pace of the gem show, makes it difficult to discuss sensitive or complicated topics.  Every year I speak with the owner, often asking questions about the same stones, but getting slightly different answers.  The communication problem makes me highly selective about which stones I will buy from her.  If the stone is from mainland China, and I can independently determine its likely mining origin, I will buy it since short supply chains are important.  If a stone is from another country, I am more cautious.
