Mineralogy of Dragonstone
Rock Type: Sorosilicate Rock
Major Minerals: Epidote and Piemontite
Color: Green and red
Location: Dragonstone is a type of Epidot and is found exclusively in South Africa.
Rock Type: Dragonstone is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Dragonstone, it combines two closely related minerals, green Epidote and Red Piemontite, both of which are Silicate minerals. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Epidote and Piemontite both belong to the sorosilcate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule. Epidote is the most abundant of all sorosilcates.
Formation: Epidote and Piemontite, the two minerals that combine to create Dragonstone, are both typically formed in metamorphic rocks such as marble. On occasion, they can be formed during hydrothermal alteration which transforms sedimentary and metamorphic rocks into igneous rocks. This more rare formation is most likely responsible for creating Dragonstone, since it is usually found near active hot springs.
Mining: Dragonstones is mined as a secondary stone in Copper mines.
Enhancements: All Dragonstones are fully natural and have been enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Dragonstone
Dragonstone is a new stone for the metaphysical community, as are the two minerals which compose it, green Epidote and red Piemontite. As a result, none of them were included in early lapidaries, texts which describe stones and their powers. Dragonstone is found only in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It was first discovered near the mouth of the Tshipise Hotsprings, which is below a dragon-shaped hill, hence the name.
South African Dragonstone looks remarkably similar to Australian Dragonblood Jasper. Despite the name and color similarities, these two stones are completely different both in mineralogy and energy. The name “Dragonstone” is also sometimes used for brown and yellow Septarian Nodules.
Healing Properties of Dragonstone
Spiritual: Dragonstone is a powerful stone of truth that illuminates our true self, in all its beauty and glory. It ignites in us a passion for personal improvement, urging us to honestly assess our strengths and weaknesses and then to make realistic plans that will result in positive change. Dragonstone is a wonderful manifestation tool, especially when used to create both financial abundance and personal happiness. It raises our spiritual vibration and self-confidence making us the masters of our own fate. Dragonstone is attuned to ALL the Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Gemini. It is connected to the elements of Earth, Water and Fire and vibrates to the number 2.
Emotional: Dragonstone has a very kind energy when we are suffering from grief and sadness. It reminds us that life is beautiful and that we have important roles to play in it. Dragonstone helps us to feel more positive and optimistic about the future. It reduces the power of our “inner critic” and magnifies positive perceptions. Dragonstone helps us to shake off any sense of “self-pity” and to re-engage with the world. It urges us to step into our personal power and to be courageous and bold.
Mental: Dragonstone offers gifts of patience and strength so we can achieve our goals. It reminds us that “failure” and “mistakes” are simply learning opportunities, rather than a statement about our own value or abilities. Dragonstone encourages us to be both patient and wise, in all aspects of our lives, but particularly in financial matters. Dragonstone helps us to save more and make better investments. Dragonstone also makes a wonderful talisman for scientists, especially those on the cutting-edge of their fields, reminding us that science and magic are one and the same, and what now seems unbelievable will one day be commonplace.
Physical: Dragonstone is believed to strengthen the immune system and liver, as well as to support general physical regeneration. It is also said to help treat disorders in the nervous system, brain, and thyroid as well as conditions exacerbated by dehydration. Dragonstone is used by metaphysical healers as a beauty aid to smooth the skin and add shine to hair and nails.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
