Healing Properties of Dumortierite

Spiritual: Dumortierite is a powerful aid for psychic perceptions including clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience.  It can be used to open and enhance intuitive abilities as well as to help us to accept our gifts and feel empowered within them.  Dumortierite brings inspiration, prophetic dreams, and messages from our spirit guides.  It also shows us how us to more clearly verbalize our spiritual ideas and beliefs. This combination of inspiration and verbalization makes it an especially good crystal ally for astrologists, tarot readers, and other spiritually-based interpreters. Dumorteirite is attuned to the Third Eye Chakra and linked to the astrological sign of Leo.  It is connected to the Element of Wind and vibrates to the number 4.

Emotional: Dumortierite is a calm, happy, comforting stone that helps us to trust that everything is unfolding as it should, even if we don’t understand the Divine Plan yet.  It encourage us to relax and it heightens emotional intelligence.  If we feel like fear is driving us into a panic, Dumortierite helps us to calm down, breath deeply, and look at our fear logically.  Dumortierite gives us courage to move through the dark times in our lives and have faith that we will emerge safely on the other side.  It helps us to stand up for ourselves and have emotional stamina.  Dumortierite also encourages us to see “outsiders” as friends we simply haven’t met yet, and to be actively inclusive of others.

Mental: Dumortierite brings mental clarity. It encourages us to keep our perspective open and be willing to look at situations from other points of view.  Dumortierite can help us to recognize compulsive behavior and our own bad habits and to calmly shift them towards a more healthy way of being.  It reduces illogical stubbornness and increases patience and curiosity.  Dumortierite is an excellent stone for enhancing pure mental abilities including linguistic skills, mathematics, abstract thinking, etc. making it an excellent totem for students and scholars.   Dumortierite encourages memory retention, teaches problem-solving skills and invites us to look at problems as interesting challenges rather than difficult obstacles.

Physical: Dumortierite is used by metaphysical healers to treat forgetfulness and other “foggy” mental disorders as well as OCD.  It is also believe to help reduce headaches, epilepsy and vision problems.  Dumortierite is said to be helpful in treating addictions of all sorts.  Metaphysical healers can also use Dumortierite to enhance their own skills and provide insight into the base cause of a condition, so that it can be understood and treated.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Mineral Family:  Dumortierite belongs to the Silicate family. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Dumortierite is in the Nesosilicate family, which have isolated tetrahedra, (tetrahedra which are not connected to each other). Other Nesosilicates include the entire Garnet family, KyanitePeridot and Topaz.

Associated Minerals: Clear Quartz, Kyanite, Epidote, Hematite, Muscovite

Formation:  Dumortierite is typically formed in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks, created by contact metamorphism.  Dumortierite is occasionally found in boron-rich igneous rocks.

Mining: Dumortierite is a secondary mineral found in aluminum-ore mines and garnet mines.  It is used in manufacturing high-grade porcelain and ceramics, as well as an ornamental stone.

Enhancements:  All Dumortierites may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, or polishing.

History of Dumortierite

Dumortierite was discovered relatively recently and so is not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe stones and their powers.

Dumortierite was named after the French paleontologist Eugene Dumortier (1801-1876).  He had spent the first part of his life working as gilder, applying a thin layer of gold or silver to decorative items.  By the age of 50, he was financially secure enough to retire from this career and focus full time on his passion for geology and paleontology.  He amassed an impressive collection of fossils and also wrote a four volume paleontological work for the Rhone-Alps region of eastern France.  Upon his death he bequeathed his fossil collection to the Natural History Museum in Lyons.  In 1881, a new blue mineral was found in the Rhone-Alps and was named in his honor.

The Miners sell to a Lapidary

The Lapidary sells to a Gem Dealer/Importer.

The Importer sells directly to Moonrise Crystals.

The Supply Chain

The Supply Chain is complicated but likely clean.

The Mine and Lapidary are most likely in the same country, but the exporter is from a different country.

At least two middle-men are involved.

The Mine

This Dumortierite comes from a small mine in Brazil.

The exact mine is unknown, but most likely caused only minimal environmental damage.

The Lapidary & Importer

This Dumortierite was most likely polished in Brazil and then exported to the United States.

The Importer is a family business, founded by an aunt in the USA and her nephew in Lima, Peru.

The Importer is eco-conscious and workers are paid fairly

Sourcing Relationship

I first spoke to the manager of the export company after finding them online in early 2017 and met the manager in person at the Denver Gem Show later that year.  I was cautious about doing business with them since they are the exporter, rather than the miners or tumblers.  But I studied their company and was pleased by their dedication to environmentalism.  They focus on exporting Fair Trade, Consciously-Made, and No-Harm Peruvian handicrafts.  They also have worked to reduce their carbon footprint in their wholesale warehouse.

In 2019, I had a long conversation with the manager about ethical topics in the stone industry.  She was willing to speak candidly about both the positives and the negatives.  She also shared how she personally struggled with the ethical issues and her part in the supply chain.  Whenever a shipment of goods arrives from Peru, she insists on smudging every box before it is brought into the factory.  The manager introduced me to the mother of the current owner.  A tiny woman, less than 5 ft tall, she was happy to reminisce with me about how she started the company more than 30 years ago.  She had been a young immigrant mother, searching for a new life.  Her nephew, back in Peru, shipped her a few buckets of Pyrite and asked her to see if she could sell them.  She laughed to remember those days and radiated happiness and gratitude.  Today, the business is run by her son and his cousin in Peru.
