Mineral Family: Dumortierite belongs to the Silicate family. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Dumortierite is in the Nesosilicate family, which have isolated tetrahedra, (tetrahedra which are not connected to each other). Other Nesosilicates include the entire Garnet family, Kyanite, Peridot and Topaz.
Formation: Dumortierite is typically formed in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks, created by contact metamorphism. Dumortierite is occasionally found in boron-rich igneous rocks.
Mining: Dumortierite is a secondary mineral found in aluminum-ore mines and garnet mines. It is used in manufacturing high-grade porcelain and ceramics, as well as an ornamental stone.
Enhancements: All Dumortierites may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, or polishing.
History of Dumortierite
Dumortierite was discovered relatively recently and so is not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts that describe stones and their powers.
Dumortierite was named after the French paleontologist Eugene Dumortier (1801-1876). He had spent the first part of his life working as gilder, applying a thin layer of gold or silver to decorative items. By the age of 50, he was financially secure enough to retire from this career and focus full time on his passion for geology and paleontology. He amassed an impressive collection of fossils and also wrote a four volume paleontological work for the Rhone-Alps region of eastern France. Upon his death he bequeathed his fossil collection to the Natural History Museum in Lyons. In 1881, a new blue mineral was found in the Rhone-Alps and was named in his honor.

Safe Handling of Dumortierite
Dumortierite contains Aluminum and as such should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “Dumortierite water” for drinking or bathing. Having too much Aluminum in the body is toxic, and drinking direct-infusion elixirs of Aluminum-derived stones is dangerous. You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.
Good To Know:
Dumortierite are physically durable stones. As long as they are rounded and without thin edges, they can be carried in a pocket or medicine bag, or worn as jewelry on an everyday basis, without significant danger of the stone chipping or breaking.
Dumortierite can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
Dumortierite can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
Dumortierite can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing their color, especially if the stone is opaque, rather than translucent or transparent. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
