Healing Properties of Golden Sheen Obsidian
Spiritual: Golden Sheen Obsidian has a bright energy, very different than pure black Obsidian. It is an empowering stone, yet one that also helps us to keep our egos in check so that they don’t dominate our consciousness or control our actions. Golden Sheen Obsidian can help us to “wake up” and to understand what is really happening in the world around us, and to face that reality without fear or denial. It invites us instead to rise up to the challenge, and to make a positive difference, in whatever way we are most able. Golden Sheen Obsidian connects us both to the strength of the Earth and the wisdom of the heavens, making it an especially good tool for shamanic practitioners and earth medicine healers. It increases psychic sensitivity and is one of the very best stones for crystal ball scrying about future events as well as for manifestation purposes. Golden Sheen Obsidian attracts wealth and prosperity on all levels. Golden Sheen Obsidian is attuned to the Root, Solar Plexus, and Sacral Chakra; is linked to Sagittarius and the element of Earth; and vibrates to the numbers 1 and 9.
Emotional: Golden Sheen Obsidian is a protective and grounding stone, that is especially good for anyone who finds themselves in trouble or simply dissatisfied with their life. It reminds us that we are capable of solving our own problems, and encourages us to take responsibility for the direction that our life is headed. Golden Sheen Obsidian gently reveals what is truly working in our life and what is holding us back. It encourages us to let go of the people, the habits, and the beliefs that no longer serve us. Golden Sheen Obsidian helps us create balance in our life, and to cultivate more peace and joy.
Mental: Golden Sheen Obsidian sharpens our instincts and reveals hidden talents. It is especially good to work with when we are trying to figure out “our purpose” in life and how to go about living it. It reminds us that we are the masters of our own destiny and that we have the intelligence and the heart needed to make our dreams come true. Golden Sheen Obsidian helps us to think sensibly and methodically and to plan effectively, when in pursuit of our loftiest and biggest goals.
Physical: Golden Sheen Obsidian is often used by metaphysical healers to help relieve pain and disorders in the stomach and digestion, including ulcers. It is also said to be helpful for men who have become impotent due to stress and other negative lifestyle issues.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Golden Sheen Obsidian
Rock Family: Igneous Rock
Major Mineral: Volcanic Glass
Minor Minerals: Feldspar, Hematite
Color: Black, gray
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Obsidian is found all over the world; however, Golden and Silver Sheen Obsidian are most likely to be mined in Mexico and the United States (Oregon).
Rock Family: Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Black Obsidian, it is an igneous rock made of black volcanic glass.
Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, but in rare cases can have a golden or silver “sheen”. This is created by small inclusions of waver vapor bubbles trapped in the glass. These bubbles have been stretched nearly flat in a series of layers, which reflect back light with a metallic glow. Sometimes the bubbles can be seen with the naked eye, but others are small enough to require a microscope.
Mining: Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract. It is much prized by indigenous cultures for crafting weapons, tools, and ornaments.
Enhancements: All Obsidian is natural, enhanced only through tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Volcanic Glass, Natural Glass
History of Gold Sheen Obsidian
Silver Sheen Obsidian is relatively new to the metaphysical world and was not included in any early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. In fact, the Obsidian family as a whole was rarely included in older lapidaries. Despite this, archaeological evidence reveals that Obsidian was used to create some of the very oldest cultural artifacts in human history. In fact, Obsidian was also used by our evolutionary ancestors and cousins! Which makes it one of the few healing crystals that can help us understand who we are, where we came from, and perhaps where we are going. To learn more about the history of Obsidian in general, please see the history tab for Black Obsidian.
Modern lapidaries will almost always include Obsidian. Sometimes it’s just the more common black variety. Sometimes lapidaries discuss the rarer varieties such as Mahogany and Snowflake or the various Sheen Obsidians, such as Rainbow, Red or Silver. Sheen Obsidians are found primarily in Mexico.
In Central and North America, Obsidian was a symbol of Tezcatlipoca, the chief god of the Aztec religion. Tezcatlipoca was the god of night, storms, kings, shamans, war, and beauty. He was depicted as a Jaguar, an incredibly potent symbol for spiritual power and authority. When the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice, it was an Obsidian knife that was wielded. The name Tezcatlipoca translates to mean “smoking mirror,” likely a direct reference to Obsidian mirrors used by Mayan priests for divination and shamanic purposes. These mirrors were said to reveal a person’s flaws as well as the steps needed to make the appropriate change. In addition to making knives and mirrors, Obsidian was also used to make talismans for protection.

I originally had Golden Sheen Obsidian from another source with more middlemen involved. I connected directly with my current source at the 2019 Gem and Mineral Show in Denver, Colorado. They work exclusively in Obsidian, both pure black and rarer varieties such as Rainbow Obsidian, Gold Sheen and Silver Sheen. I learned that the father had been mining Obsidian his whole life and that when his children became adults, they decided to start a polishing factory and direct import to the US. Their stock is exquisite, both the quality of the stone and the polishing techniques. I am very happy to do business with them.
