Rock Family: Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Black Obsidian, it is an igneous rock made of black volcanic glass.

Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, but in rare cases can have a golden or silver “sheen”.  This is created by small inclusions of waver vapor bubbles trapped in the glass.  These bubbles have been stretched nearly flat in a series of layers, which reflect back light with a metallic glow.  Sometimes the bubbles can be seen with the naked eye, but others are small enough to require a microscope.

Mining: Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract. It is much prized by indigenous cultures for crafting weapons, tools, and ornaments.

History of Golden Sheen Obsidian

Obsidian was not included in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.  By contrast, Obsidian is included in most modern lapidaries, with some describing the various types of Obsidian, including Apache Tear, Black, Mahogany, Snowflake, and various Sheens, such as Rainbow or Red.

Healing Properties of Golden Sheen Obsidian

Spiritual: Golden Sheen Obsidian has a bright energy, very different than pure black Obsidian.  It is an empowering stone, yet one that also helps us to keep our egos in check so that they don’t dominate our consciousness or control our actions.  Golden Sheen Obsidian can help us to “wake up” and to understand what is really happening in the world around us, and to face that reality without fear or denial.  It invites us instead to rise up to the challenge, and to make a positive difference, in whatever way we are most able.  Golden Sheen Obsidian connects us both to the strength of the Earth and the wisdom of the heavens, making it an especially good tool for shamanic practitioners and earth medicine healers.  It increases psychic sensitivity and is one of the very best stones for crystal ball scrying about future events as well as for manifestation purposes.  Golden Sheen Obsidian attracts wealth and prosperity on all levels.  Golden Sheen Obsidian is attuned to the Root, Solar Plexus, and Sacral Chakra; is linked to Sagittarius and the element of Earth; and vibrates to the numbers 1 and 9.

Emotional: Golden Sheen Obsidian is a protective and grounding stone, that is especially good for anyone who finds themselves in trouble or simply dissatisfied with their life.  It reminds us that we are capable of solving our own problems, and encourages us to take responsibility for the direction that our life is headed.  Golden Sheen Obsidian gently reveals what is truly working in our life and what is holding us back.  It encourages us to let go of the people, the habits, and the beliefs that no longer serve us.  Golden Sheen Obsidian helps us create balance in our life, and to cultivate more peace and joy.

Mental: Golden Sheen Obsidian sharpens our instincts and reveals hidden talents.   It is especially good to work with when we are trying to figure out “our purpose” in life and how to go about living it.  It reminds us that we are the masters of our own destiny and that we have the intelligence and the heart needed to make our dreams come true.  Golden Sheen Obsidian helps us to think sensibly and methodically and to plan effectively, when in pursuit of our loftiest and biggest goals.

Physical: Golden Sheen Obsidian is often used by metaphysical healers to help relieve pain and disorders in the stomach and digestion, including ulcers.  It is also said to be helpful for men who have become impotent due to stress and other negative lifestyle issues.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Sourcing Relationship

I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show.  They carry a wide-variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare.  The tumbled Celestite and specialty Obsidian particularly caught my eye, since no other source carries them.  The owners are a married couple, he takes care of their larger stones, while she is the self-proclaimed, “Tumbled Stone Queen.” The Queen knows her stock inside and out and we’ve spoken in person and by phone about the geology and origins of various minerals.

The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause.  I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions for the countries in question.
