Mineralogy of Indigo Gabbro
Color: Black, blue
Location: Gabbro is a fairly common igneous rock, found in many locations worldwide. Indigo Gabbro is a rare form found only in Madagascar.
Rock Type: Indigo Gabbro is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients such as flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Indigo Gabbro, it is an igneous rock made principally of Augite and Feldspar, as well as Chlorite, Lodestone, Muscovite, Serpentine and various other minor minerals.
Associated Minerals: Olivine (Peridot), various rare metals
Formation: Indigo Gabbro is formed when molten magma trapped beneath the Earth’s surface, slowly cools and becomes solid rock. Gabbro is chemically identical to basalt. The only difference between the two stone is that Gabbro is formed below the earth’s crust and so is coarse-grained, while Basalt forms on the surface of the earth, after a volcanic eruption, and is fine-grained.
Mining: Gabbro is relatively common and mined in massive quantities. Left rough, it is used as a base for roads pavement and polished it is used on the outside of buildings as countertops, and even gravestones. Polished Gabbro is often referred to as “Black Granite”.
Enhancements: All Indigo Gabbro may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, or polishing.
Synonym: Mystic Merlinite, Blizzard Stone (See History Tab for more details)
History of Indigo Gabbro
Indigo Gabbro is a relatively “new” stone on the market and was not included any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. In modern lapidaries, there is often some confusion about which stone is being described since there are several commercial names associated with this stone, including: Black Granite, Blizzard Stone and Mystic Merlinite.
Indigo Gabbro is a form of Gabbro, a common dark-colored, coarse-grained igneous rock. Gabbro is relatively easy to polish and is resistant to weathering and wear. It is sometimes called “Black Granite” by manufacturers and merchants who sell ‘granite’ counter-tops, floor tiles, and even graveyard headstones. Granite is a closely related igneous rock, but is typically white, pink or grey.
Most Gabbro is darkly colored, but one deposit found in Madagascar has a striking balance of black and a purple/blue/grey. Gabbro from this deposit is properly known as “Indigo Gabbro.” Commercial marketers also sometimes sell this stone as “Mystic Merlinite”. This is not to be confused with regular “Merlinite” which is found in New Mexico, USA and is a white agate with black Maganese, sometimes with sparkly druzy crystals. Merlinite is more properly called “White Dendritic Agate”
Another rare form of Gabbro is called “Blizzard Stone” and it is found only in Alaska. However, Indigo Gabbro from Madgascar and Blizzard Stone from Alaska are often confused. Simply put, both stones are Gabbros, but Blizzard Stone is black and white, while Indigo Gabbro is black and purple/blue.

Earth to Pocket
Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.
These Indigo Gabbros were mined and tumbled in Madagascar.
I first met the owner of the company at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was attending the Tucson show primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones! It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful tumbled stones in the show.
In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals and the company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This company only sells tumbled stones once a year, at the Tucson show, which is the largest gem and mineral show in the world. During the rest of the year, they mine and polish their stones and are respected philanthropists and social workers for their community. They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Indigo Gabbro for you.
This price is for one stone. You can buy a single Indigo Gabbro or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Indigo Gabbro measures at least 1 inch at its longest length and have a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.
The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips and be a beautiful shiny black and blue stone with attractive markings. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their beautiful color and clean energies, these Indigo Gabbro are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
Safe Handling of Indigo Gabbro
Indigo Gabbro may include a wide-assortment of minerals and so should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “Indigo Gabbro Water” for drinking or bathing. You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.
Good to Know:
Indigo Gabbro is sometimes called “Mystic Merlinite”. The latter name is a commercial/marketing name. “Merlinite” is a closely-related stones mined in New Mexico, USA. Indigo Gabbro may also be sold as “Blizzard Stone”, which is a very similar stone mined in Alaska. In rough form, Indigo Gabbro and Blizzard Stone are indistinguishable, however Indigo Gabbro takes a much better polish.
Indigo Gabbro can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
Indigo Gabbro can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
Indigo Gabbro can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing its color. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
