An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients such as flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Indigo Gabbro, it is an igneous rock made principally of Augite and Feldspar, as well as Chlorite, Lodestone, Muscovite, Serpentine and various other minor minerals.

Associated Minerals: Olivine (Peridot), various rare metals

Formation: Indigo Gabbro is formed when molten magma trapped beneath the Earth’s surface, slowly cools and becomes solid rock.  Gabbro is chemically identical to basalt.  The only difference between the two stone is that Gabbro is formed below the earth’s crust and so is coarse-grained, while Basalt forms on the surface of the earth, after a volcanic eruption, and is fine-grained.

Mining: Gabbro is relatively common and mined in massive quantities.  Left rough, it is used as a base for roads pavement and polished it is used on the outside of buildings as countertops, and even gravestones.  Polished Gabbro is often referred to as “Black Granite”.

Enhancements:  All Indigo Gabbro may be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, or polishing.

Synonym:  Mystic Merlinite, Blizzard Stone (See History Tab for more details)

History of Indigo Gabbro

Indigo Gabbro is a relatively “new” stone on the market and was not included any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.  In modern lapidaries, there is often some confusion about which stone is being described since there are several commercial names associated with this stone, including: Black Granite, Blizzard Stone and Mystic Merlinite.

merlinIndigo Gabbro is a form of Gabbro, a common dark-colored, coarse-grained igneous rock.  Gabbro is relatively easy to polish and is resistant to weathering and wear.  It is sometimes called “Black Granite” by manufacturers and merchants who sell ‘granite’ counter-tops, floor tiles, and even graveyard headstones.  Granite is a closely related igneous rock, but is typically white, pink or grey.

Most Gabbro is darkly colored, but one deposit found in Madagascar has a striking balance of black and a purple/blue/grey.  Gabbro from this deposit is properly known as “Indigo Gabbro.”  Commercial marketers also sometimes sell this stone as “Mystic Merlinite”.  This is not to be confused with regular “Merlinite” which is found in New Mexico, USA and is a white agate with black Maganese, sometimes with sparkly druzy crystals.  Merlinite is more properly called “White Dendritic Agate”

Another rare form of Gabbro is called “Blizzard Stone” and it is found only in Alaska. However, Indigo Gabbro from Madgascar and Blizzard Stone from Alaska are often confused.  Simply put, both stones are Gabbros, but Blizzard Stone is black and white, while Indigo Gabbro is black and purple/blue.

Healing Properties of Indigo Gabbro

Spiritual: Indigo Gabbro kick-starts our spiritual journey and encouarges us to grow into our most authentic self.  It grounds our spiritual beliefs into practical actions, so that we truly live our beliefs, rather than just talking about them or vaguely aspiring to them.  Indigo Gabbro preaches that our life is our religion, and how we conduct ourselves in our everyday life is the window into our real spiritual beliefs.  However, Indigo Gabbro also reminds us that we are fully capable of changing and evolving, so if our actions do not match our beliefs, it is a relatively straightforward matter to course-correct and begin to act in greater integrity.  Indigo Gabbro can amplify energy vibrations, whether from other crystals or from an outside energy force such as reiki. Indigo Gabbro is attuned to the Third Eye and Solar Plexus Chakras and the astrological signs of Taurus and Cancer.  It is connected to the Element of Storm and vibrates to the number 1.

Emotional: Indigo Gabbro is a grounding and inspiring stone to work with.  It helps us to look at our life logically, and to focus on practical solutions that will bring us more peace and good energy.  It encourages us to claim our own power and to be confident.  It has an expansive energy, that helps us to think big and to actively dare to make our dreams come true.  Indigo Gabbro is especially helpful for anyone who has a tendency to feel like a victim or someone who has no control or power in their own life.  Indigo Gabbro whispers the truth – that we do have power and control, and that we can change our life.  Indigo Gabbro helps us to be patient while we change, but also to stay determined and keep a steady course.  It encourages us to maintain balance and to remember to be grateful for what is already good, even as we move forward in other areas.

Mental: Indigo Gabbro invites us to think very carefully about our habits, both the things that we regularly do, as well as the things that we regularly don’t do.  Indigo Gabbro asks us to carefully question whether or not those habits serve our Highest Good, or whether they are actually forms of self-sabotage.  Indigo Gabbro reminds us that in many ways we are in control of our life and our destiny, and the habits we engage in, our what often directs our path.  Change our habits, and we change our life!  Indigo Gabbro helps us to feel more confident in our own ability to determine what needs to be done, and then to do it.

Physical: Indigo Gabbro is used by metaphysical healers to treat the feet and skeletal system.  It is said to be especially good for treating the spine and the skull, and is believe to help heal brain damage caused by a traumatic physical injury.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the lapidary at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was at Tucson primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones. It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful stones in the entire show.

In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals.  The company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This lapidary company only sells at a handful of major gem shows.  The only time they are in the USA is for the Tucson Gem Show. During the rest of the year, the lapidary hand polishes their stock and also does charity work in their local community.  They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry and are among my favorite suppliers.

In 2019, Moonrise Crystals and the Madagascar lapidary company joined together to financially support a rural school in Madagascar.

Cleaning Healing Crystals

There are many ways to cleanse, charge, and set intentions with crystals.

Before cleaning your healing crystals, always consider the geology of each stone.  Some stones are sensitive to water and/or sunlight.  Best Practice is to keep your stones out of direct sunlight when you’re not working with them, simply because the sunlight will fade the crystal’s color over time.  This is especially true for transparent and translucent gems.  Remember crystals grow underground where it’s nice and dark!  Stones that are formed in dry desert conditions may be harmed by immersion in water.  This is especially true for fragile and porous stones.

One of the easiest and most effective way to energetically clean crystals is to smudge them with smoke from plants like sage, juniper, cedar, lavender, tobacco, etc.  Each plant has its own unique smell and spiritual property.  Moonrise Crystals smudges with white mountain sage (for cleansing) and sweet grass (for kindness) before the crystals are sent to their forever home with you.

Other common ways to energetically clean healing crystals are to set stones near a piece of Carnelian, Citrine, Kyanite, Selenite or other stones that are energy purifiers.  Be sure to pamper the purifying stones regularly so that they can continue to do their job properly.  Citrine and Kyanite are self-cleansers that don’t “need” extra care.  But they will love getting extra attention from you!

If a stone is doing a lot of heavy energetic work, one of the best ways to restore its energy reserves is to allow it to rest on the earth, next to a plant.  A potted plant inside the house works just fine.  Let the crystal rest overnight or longer, until its energy feels bright and sparkly again.

Charging and Setting Intentions with Healing Crystals

There is no right/wrong way to charge and set intentions.  But here’s a few ways that it’s done at Moonrise Crystals.

Cleanse the crystals and yourself.  It is good to take the time to physically clean stones before doing spiritual work.  It sets a tone of purity, respect, and reverence.  Hold the crystals or be near them.  Sing or talk to the stones.  Tell them about yourself and what you are working on.  Ask them for their help.  You don’t need to use any special words, simply speak from the heart.  Treat the crystals like your best friends and closest allies.    They want to help you.

If you feel shy or awkward, you can also write your message on a piece of paper and set the stones on top of it.  Music, including singing bowls, can also be used.  The most important thing is simply to be present with the stones and focused on setting the intention.

This can be done at any time, day or night.  However, nighttime is often a particularly good time for setting intentions.  Take the crystals outside, if possible.  You can talk to your crystals outside, or you may just want to sit near them and meditate or pray.

  • During the Full Moon, energy is amplified.  It is also a wonderful time to celebrate in the bright light when your intentions are already going well and you want to keep the trend going.
  • The New Moon is a time for new beginnings. The darkness is like planting a seed underground.  It will grow up into the Light.
  • Eclipses, meteorite showers, and other astronomical events will add their own unique energy.
  • Knowing where the moon is astrologically, can also add a fun element to intention setting.  The moon changes signs every 2-3 days.

How much more mysterious the Indigo Gabbro is than a photo can convey. The purple-blue-indigo gleams subtly when I turn it in my hand, and the black areas glitter with little bright flecks. And that magical iridescent place. And those concentric shiney bits! I guess it’s obvious how much I’ve been staring at this crystal, yet it seems there’s always more to see. I’m also learning that it’s a stone whose effects will grow in proportion to how I learn to use it. An adventure!
