Location: Leopardskin Jasper is found throughout the world. The most notable deposits are found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, the United States, and Uruguay.Rock Family: Leopardskin Jasper is not a mineral, but rather a rock. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock!
Formation: Despite its name, Leopardskin Jasper is not actually a type of Jasper. It is a form of Rhyolite, a type of igneous rock. Rhyolite is a type of extrusive igneous rock, formed on the surface of the earth by molten magma due to a volcanic eruption. There are five types of igneous rocks created by lava: Basalt, Obsidian, Rhyolite, Trachyte, and Andesite. Other types of igneous rocks, such as Granite, are created by processes deep within the earth. Rhyolite is a relatively rare volcanic rock, almost exclusively found in the interiors of continents. Most Rhyolites are porphyritic and contain large Quartz crystals or other varieties of crystals in an extremely fine-grained matrix. This indicates that these crystals were already being formed before the lava flowed onto the surface. Leopardskin Jasper is a popular name given to pink spotted Rhyolite.
Mining: Mined at its primary deposit, usually found with Obsidian and Pumice.
Enhancements: All varieties of Rhyolite, including Leopardskin Jasper, Ocean Jasper, and Rainforest Jasper are fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting and polishing.
Synonyms: Jaguar Stone, Rhyolite
History of Leopardskin Jasper
The name “Jasper” is a generic name given to any spotted stone as well as most semi-transparent or opaque Chalcedony. As a result, it can be difficult to know exactly which stone is being referenced in ancient and medieval writings. Leopardskin Jasper is a type of pink Rhyolite whose specific healing energies have only recently been explored.
The name “Leopardskin Jasper” or “Jaguar Stone” is, of course, due to the spots which decorate this pretty Jasper.
Healing Properties of Leopardskin Jasper
Spiritual: Leopardskin Jasper is a dynamic stone that can help us achieve our most lofty goals. It is a wonderful grounding stone, whose energy is strong yet not “heavy.” Jasper has been called the “supreme nurturer.” In the case of Leopardskin Jasper, this nurturing resembles a mama bear protecting her young from harm, assuring they are safe and well-loved. Leopardskin Jasper is attuned to the Root, Sacral, and Heart Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Capricorn and Leo. It is connected to the element Earth and vibrates to the number 6.
Emotional: Leopardskin Jasper is a stone of great courage. It can remind us to stand up for ourselves and to fight for justice. Leopardskin Jasper helps us to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions. It also acts as a protective stone, providing a subtle “don’t mess with me” energy that helps keep negative people away.
Mental: Leopardskin Jasper encourages us to be absolutely honest, with others and even more importantly with ourselves. It banishes illusions and give us the courage to accept what truly is. Leopardskin Jasper can help us be mentally brave, willing to look at the “hard stuff” and make tough decisions. It is also a stone of imagination and creativity.
Physical: Leopardskin Jasper is said to help stimulate circulation and increase physical energy. It is also believed to help strengthen the immune system, act as a detoxifying agent, and soothe the nerves. It has also been used to assist with healthy functioning of the sexual organs and provide increased physical pleasure and fertility.

These Leopardskin Jaspers were mined in Mexico and tumbled in South Africa.
I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry, and are one of my favorite suppliers.
