Rock Type: True Jasper is a Silicate mineral. However, “Jasper” is a term that is often used to describe any spotted stone.  Kambaba Jasper is actually a Stromatolite, a very unique kind of sedimentary rock. Most Stromatolites form as Limestone, so their main mineral ingredient is usually Calcite. These Stromatolites are typically brown or grey, with black markings.  Occasionally Stromatolites form as Sandstone, with the main mineral ingredients being Quartz or Feldspar. Feldspar-Sandstone Stromatilites appear vivid green with black markings, and have been given the commercial name of Kambaba Jasper.

Formation: Kambaba Jaspers, like other Stromatolites are formed in shallow, salty water teeming with microorganisms, particularly cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These tiny living creatures form massive colonies and sediments, such as sand and mud, get stuck to the sticky surface of this living mass of cyanobacteria. The sediments are gradually set down in layers and react to the trace minerals in the water. Over time, they form Limestone or Sandstone rocks, often shaped like a mushroom or a loaf. While underwater, the Stromatolite is “alive” – part cyanobacteria colony, part sedimentary material. If the water evaporates, or other conditions change, the cyanobacteria dies and the structure hardens further. At this point, it becomes a more typical sedimentary rock – but one containing microscopic fossils of the cyanobacteria. Stromatolites are some of the oldest rocks on the planet, with some examples dating back over 3.5 billion years! Stromatolites are still being formed today in a few rare locations. As a result, Stromatolite is often called a “living fossil.” (For more information, see the History Tab).

History of Kambaba Jasper

The name “Jasper” is a generic name given to any spotted stone as well as most semi-transparent or opaque Chalcedony.  Despite its name, Kambaba Jasper is not a true Jasper, but rather a type of sedimentary rock covered in ancient fossils, properly known as a Stromatolite.  Stromatolites have been “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so are not included in virtually any ancient and relatively few modern lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Its name comes from the Greek words stroma (layers)and lithos (rock). While there are no known myths about this stone, it has a fascinating geological history!

Live Cynobacteria

Live Cynobacteria

Stromatolites are created by single-celled microorganisms called cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria are arguably the most successful living entities on the planet! They are the most genetically diverse, and occupy the broadest range of habitats, across all latitudes, including land, fresh and salt water, and extreme niches such as hot springs and hypersaline bays. The reason for this incredible diversity is that cyanobacteria has had the most time to evolve of any living creature. In fact, cyanobacteria are the oldest known example of life on earth – dating back at least 3.5 billion years (a billion years after the Earth first formed). They formed first and are still alive today, having survived all five of the Earth’s Mass Extinctions! From an evolutionary perspective, cyanobacteria are our oldest ancestor – the very original Adam and Eve. The reason we know all about cyanobacteria’s incredible history is because the oldest traces of cyanobacteria have been preserved in the fossil record – in Stromatolites.

While some Stromatolites are very old and have become simple fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks, other Stromatolites are still alive with active colonies of cyanobacteria. Modern Stromatolites have been found in hypersaline lakes and marine lagoons with an exceptionally high saline level, extreme environments that few other living creatures can stand. These modern Stromatolites are located in Australia, Bahamas, Belize,  Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Turkey. The most well known are those in Shark Bay, in Western Australia and Exumas Bay in the Bahamas.

Healing Properties of Kambaba Jasper

Spiritual: Kambaba Jasper has a beautiful nurturing energy that gently dissolves negative energy and cleanses the aura.  It is a stone for spiritual confidence and helps us be in alignment with our own ancestral wisdom and deep earth wisdom.  It helps us stay grounded and serene, even during challenge times. Kambaba Jasper is attuned to the Root and Heart Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Leo and Virgo. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 6 and 8.

Emotional: Kambaba Jasper is a soothing crystal which activates the heart chakra and helps us to find emotional balance. It is particularly useful for helping us to find a new sense of balance during and directly after intense situations.  It can also help us to let go of any emotional/mental obsession or trauma.   This makes it a particularly good stone to have after breakups or during times of grieving as it can help us to make peace with what is and to move forward in our life. It is a stone that reminds us that we are meant to be happy, that life goes on, and that we need to go on too.

Mental: Kambaba Jasper helps us stay calm and to focus on what is important. It is especially good at helping re-direct thoughts away from the negative and towards the positive. As a result, it can also help reduce nightmares. Kambaba Jasper also works to increase prosperity and money flow, especially in the context of careers or already-established business ventures. It helps us to avoid unnecessary changes and remain stable and on course.

Physical: Kambaba Jasper is said to be a powerful stone for treating conditions at a cellular level and has been used to treat cancer, HIV, and other diseases. It is also commonly used to treat skin disorders and reduce inflammation and bloating.  Kambaba Jasper is additionally used for fertility and to help ensure a healthy pregnancy, especially during the critical first trimester.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These Kambaba Jaspers were mined and tumbled in South Africa.

I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry, and are one of my favorite suppliers.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Kambaba Jasper for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone. You can buy a single Kambaba Jasper or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Kambaba Jasper measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges.

The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips.  It will have a beautiful dark green with jet black whorls, bands and other mysterious markings.  If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together.  Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their beautiful colors and clean energies, these Kambaba Jaspers are perfect for crystal healing.  Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
