Mineral Family: Mangano Calcite is the pink variety of Calcite, which is a Carbonate mineral. Carbonates are an important part of the Earth’s crust and are found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Carbonates are minerals which contain the carbonate group CO3 as their basic structural unit. They form in a trigonal system with one carbon atom centrally located between 3 oxygen atoms. While there are over 70 types of Carbonate minerals, the most common are Dolomite, Siderite, and Calcite.
Formation: Calcite is formed when liquid calcium, shell, coral, and algal debris settle onto the muddy bottom of a saltwater ocean or lake. From there they are gradually solidified into a single mass during diagenesis, the process of transforming loose sediment into a sedimentary rock. The resulting rock is typically Limestone, which is richly laced with small Calcite minerals. Later on, if the Limestone is subjected to heat and pressure it can become Marble, a metamorphic rock. The heat and pressure of the metamorphic process causes larger Calcite crystals to grow. In rare cases, Calcite may be found as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks alongside calcium-rich Feldspar.
Mining: Calcite is a principal crystal extracted in commercial Limestone mines. It is mined in shallow pits at the primary deposit where the Calcite still has its original relationship with the host rock. After being extracted, Calcite is sorted into different grades depending on color. From a commercial viewpoint, the best variety is pure white, which can be pulverized into a powder and used to make rubber, paint, cement, textile goods, and especially ceramics.
Enhancements: All Mangano Calcite is natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

History of Mangano Calcite
Mangano Calcite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Calcite is an extremely common and soft mineral which makes it an excellent choice for carving, both in ancient times and today. It is certainly possible that many of the carvings had healing and spiritual purposes.
Most Calcites are found in Limestone. In fact, the word “Calcite” comes from the Greek word chalix, meaning lime.

I first spoke to the manager of the export company after finding them online in early 2017 and met the manager in person at the Denver Gem Show later that year. I was cautious about doing business with them since they are the exporter, rather than the miners or tumblers. But I studied their company and was pleased by their dedication to environmentalism. They focus on exporting Fair Trade, Consciously-Made, and No-Harm Peruvian handicrafts. They also have worked to reduce their carbon footprint in their wholesale warehouse.
In 2019, I had a long conversation with the manager about ethical topics in the stone industry. She was willing to speak candidly about both the positives and the negatives. She also shared how she personally struggled with the ethical issues and her part in the supply chain. Whenever a shipment of goods arrives from Peru, she insists on smudging every box before it is brought into the factory. The manager introduced me to the mother of the current owner. A tiny woman, less than 5 ft tall, she was happy to reminisce with me about how she started the company more than 30 years ago. She had been a young immigrant mother, searching for a new life. Her nephew, back in Peru, shipped her a few buckets of Pyrite and asked her to see if she could sell them. She laughed to remember those days and radiated happiness and gratitude. Today, the business is run by her son and his cousin in Peru.
