Mineral Family: Citrine is a yellow variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. The most highly prized variety of all is Amethyst, or purple Quartz. Yellow Quartz is Citrine.

Formation: Citrine is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rock. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. Trace particles of aluminum and lithium within the silica acid gives Citrine its yellow color, otherwise the silica acid would transform into Clear Quartz.  Chemically speaking, Citrine and Smoky Quartz are identical, the only difference is that Smoky Quartz have been irradiated.

Mining: Citrine is a highly desirable and relatively rare semi-precious stone. It is typically found near or within Amethyst mines, since the only chemical difference between the two stones is how quickly the silica acid cooled down!

Enhancements: While Citrine does occur naturally, the vast majority of Citrines are actually heat-treated Amethysts.  More than 200 years ago, it was discovered that when Amethysts are carefully heated between 800 and 900 degrees Fahrenheit they take on a bright golden color. This discovery gave mines and gem dealers a a way to transform low grade Amethyst into a more desirable commodity.  The difference between natural and burnt Citrine is obvious in tumbled stones.  But for high quality gemstones, only a trained specialist can recognize the difference – Burnt Citrines have subtle stripes while Natural Citrines are slightly cloudy.  Natural Citrine gets its pale golden color from minor inclusions of lithium and aluminum. By contrast, the bright yellow of Burnt Citrine comes from Iron.

History of Natural Citrine

Yellow-Gemstones 2Citrine was not included as a distinct mineral in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. Instead the name “Citrine,” which comes from the French “citrini”, which comes from “citreus” the Latin for lemon, was used as a generic name for many kinds of yellow stones  including Beryls (Golden Beryl and Helidor), Corundum (yellow Sapphire), Quartz (modern Citrine), Topaz (Golden Topaz and Imperial Topaz) and Zircon (Hyacinth and Jacinth). During ancient and early medieval times, these little golden stones were playful called “merchant’s stones” since they were believed to bring financial prosperity to their owners. The name Citrine was first used to denote purely yellow Quartz starting in 1546.

During ancient and early medieval times, any yellow stone might be considered the birthstone for November. By contrast, modern birthstone charts typically list yellow Topaz as the proper birthstone, although some list Citrine as an alternative. Today, some wily merchants continue to use the terms Citrine and Topaz interchangeably, since Topaz is considered a precious gemstone and typically commands a higher price than the semi-precious Citrine. As a result, various shades of Citrine are sometime called by titles such as; “Citrine Topaz,” “Madeira Topaz,” “Palmyra Topaz,” “Saxon Topaz,” “Spanish Topaz,” and “Topaz Quartz.”  All of these names are considered a misrepresentation by gemologists. By contrast, there are some names that denote where a particular form of Citrine was mined or its specific shade of color. Citrine that goes by the name of “Cairngorn” is mined in Scotland, near the city of the same name. Whereas sang de beouf (French for “ox blood”) refers to a Citrine which is a dark reddish-brown in color, rather than a bright yellow.

To confuse the matter even more, few Citrines currently on the market are in fact Natural. Instead the vast majority are Burnt Citrines, or heat-treated Amethysts or Smoky Quartz. Burnt Citrines have been produced for more than 200 years, after it was discovered that when Amethyst and Smoky Quartz are carefully heated between 470 and 560 degrees they take on a bright golden color. This discovery gave mines and gem dealers a a way to transform low grade Amethyst and Smoky Quartz into a more desirable commodity. Most of the Citrine on today’s market is Burnt Citrine from Brazil. One of the few locations currently producing Natural Citrine is in Madagascar.

Healing Properties of Natural Citrine

Spiritual: Natural Citrine has one of the most powerful energies of all crystals. It purifies the energy of everything around it, and is one of the few “self-cleansing crystals” capable of maintaining its own brilliant energy field. Natural Citrine is a potent tool for manifestation, helping us to know our desires and ask the Divine to guide our actions and lead us to success. When the road is difficult, Natural Citrine lends us strength and banishes feelings of heaviness and darkness from our spirit, replacing it with vibrant golden Light. Citrine is attuned to the Solar Plexus Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra. It is connected to the element of Fire and vibrates to the number 6.

Emotional: Natural Citrine’s energy is exceptionally joyful and happy, making it one of the most useful stones to use to treat depression and anxiety. Its purifying energy helps protect us from being drained by difficult situations or people. Furthermore, it can help us to set and maintain clear emotional boundaries so that we don’t need to rely on its protection. It helps us to see that it is ok to say “no” and also to be clear about what we WANT rather than merely focused on the minimum we NEED to survive. Natural Citrine encourages us to think and feel clearly about what is necessary for our happiness and to confidently do the work necessary to bring that about. It teaches us that when we do the work, we are properly entitled to enjoy the result.

Mental: Natural Citrine’s purifying energy helps us to keep our thoughts clear and clean, so we can make good decisions and put them into action immediately. It helps us to rapidly digest complex information, particularly as related to power, boundaries, and manifestation. Citrine helps us to organize our thoughts into those which serve us, and those which do not, and to quickly discard those that do not. It is particularly helpful for helping us to understand and move past any mental blocks dealing with money. It helps us to let go of feelings of being “undeserving” or the erroneous belief that money is “evil.” Instead, Citrine shows us that money buys marshmallows and builds hospitals, and can therefore be considered a “good thing” worthy of being gathered, saved, spent, and enjoyed.

Physical: Natural Citrine has been used to treat the stomach, spleen and pancreas and is said to promote digestion. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to speed up metabolism and heal the endocrine system. Natural Citrine is particularly useful for helping us to make the practical lifestyle changes that are necessary after being diagnosed with early diabetes.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Safe Handling of Citrine

Caution!!!

Citrine will quickly lose its color over time if left in direct sunlight. It is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

Unique Trait ♥

Citrines are one of the very few “self-cleansing stones”and as such do not need to to be energetically cleansed in order to keep their energy bright. They can even be used to cleanse the energy of other stones without having their own energy diminished. However, Citrine will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.

Good To Know:

Citrine are physically durable stones. As long as they are rounded and without thin edges, they can be carried in a pocket or medicine bag, or worn as jewelry on an everyday basis, without significant danger of the stone chipping or breaking.

Citrine can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These Natural Citrines were mined and hand polished in Madagascar.

I first met the owner of the company at the 2006 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. At that time I was working for a crystal shop in Utah and was attending the Tucson show primarily as a “pack mule” to help carry all the stones! It was generally agreed by our crew that the “Madagascar” tent contained the most beautiful tumbled stones in the show.

In 2014, I embarked on my first buying trip for Moonrise Crystals and the company I knew of only as “Madagascar” was the one company I was most determined to find and buy from. This company only sells tumbled stones once a year, at the Tucson show, which is the largest gem and mineral show in the world. During the rest of the year, they mine and polish their stones and are respected philanthropists and social workers for their community. They continue to offer some of the most beautiful tumbled stones in the industry.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Natural Citrine for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone.

You can buy a single Natural Citrine or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Citrine measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique rounded shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their natural beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be a beautiful Yellow Quartz captured within Clear Quartz! If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their beautiful color and clean energies, these Citrines are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
