Mineralogy of Rainbow Obsidian
Color: Black, gray
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Obsidian is found all over the world. But most of the Obsidian on the market is from Ecuador, Indonesia, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. Most Rainbow Obsidian is mined in Mexico.
Rock Family: Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Obsidian, it is an igneous rock made of black volcanic glass with minor minerals inclusions.
Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, however the inclusion of various minerals can create opaque colored varieties such Mahogany Obsidian or Snowflake Obsidian. Rare forms of Obsidian have a colorful sheen that appears when moved in the light. This effect is usually created by small inclusions of waver vapor bubbles trapped in the glass. These bubbles have been stretched nearly flat in a series of layers which reflect back light with a metallic glow. Examples of this include: Golden Sheen Obsidian and Red Sheen Obsidian. Rainbow Obsidian has the shimmer of a sheen Obsidian, but the colors actually come from nanoparticles of Magnetite. It is thought that the different colors are due to differing cooling rates of the molten lava.
Mining: Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract. It is much prized by indigenous cultures for crafting weapons, tools, and ornaments.
Enhancements: All Obsidian is natural, enhanced only through tumbling, cutting, and polishing. Properly cut and polished, Rainbow Obsidian can be truly breathtaking.

Healing Properties of Rainbow Obsidian
Spiritual: Rainbow Obsidian acts as a bridge between the dark and light places inside of us, making it a powerful crystal ally whenever we are ready to do important personal work. Rainbow Obsidian offers us safe passage and guidance into those dark parts of ourselves that most scare us so that we can find and process any pain that is trapped there. It also helps us to find the lost parts of ourselves so we can heal and reclaim them. Like all varieties of Obsidian, it is a stone of truth which shows us the true nature of reality. But while regular Obsidian can reveal the truth harshly in a naked light, Rainbow Obsidian reveals the truth more gently so that we can more easily process and understand it. Rainbow Obsidian clears the aura and other energy fields of any stagnate or negative energy that has gotten trapped within. It is attuned to the Root Chakra in particular, but can be used to cleanse all the Charkas and linked to the astrological sign of Libra. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 2.
Emotional: Rainbow Obsidian shows us how to navigate affairs of the heart with ease and optimism. It helps us to recognize the truth about ourselves and about other people, so that we can make good emotional choices. Rainbow Obsidian can be used to attract a new romantic relationship. It can also be used to cut emotional ties that link us to old romances. By cutting these ties, we can then look back upon old relationships fondly but move forward into new relationships that may bring greater joy to our hearts. Rainbow Obsidian lifts away depression by helping us focus our attention on the present moment and future opportunities, rather than dwelling on the past. When we are suffering from intense mood-swings, Rainbow Obsidian can help us to ground down and find the correct mood that best matches our current circumstances.
Mental: Rainbow Obsidian help us think logically and clearly about our problems, especially complex emotional issues. It helps us to recognize what is actually true, rather than stubbornly focusing on what we wish was true. Rainbow Obsidian also helps us to get out of our heads and start actively participating in life. It encourages us to to take pleasure in the world around us and to never miss an opportunity to celebrate good times.
Physical: Rainbow Obsidian is used by metaphysical healers to treat broken bones, bruised muscles and the physical heart. It is said to be an especially useful tool for treating stress-created diseases and to ease general tension in the body.

I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show. They carry a wide-variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare. The tumbled Celestite and specialty Obsidian particularly caught my eye, since no other source carries them. The owners are a married couple, he takes care of their larger stones, while she is the self-proclaimed, “Tumbled Stone Queen.” The Queen knows her stock inside and out and we’ve spoken in person and by phone about the geology and origins of various minerals.
The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause. I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions for the countries in question.
