Rock Family: Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Obsidian, it is an igneous rock made of black volcanic glass with minor minerals inclusions.

Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, however the inclusion of various minerals can create opaque colored varieties such Mahogany Obsidian or Snowflake Obsidian. Rare forms of  Obsidian have a colorful sheen that appears when moved in the light.  This effect is usually created by small inclusions of waver vapor bubbles trapped in the glass.  These bubbles have been stretched nearly flat in a series of layers which reflect back light with a metallic glow.  Examples of this include: Golden Sheen Obsidian and Red Sheen Obsidian.  Rainbow Obsidian has the shimmer of a sheen Obsidian, but the colors actually come from nanoparticles of Magnetite.  It is thought that the different colors are due to differing cooling rates of the molten lava.

Mining: Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract. It is much prized by indigenous cultures for crafting weapons, tools, and ornaments.

Enhancements: All Obsidian is natural, enhanced only through tumbling, cutting, and polishing.  Properly cut and polished, Rainbow Obsidian can be truly breathtaking.

History of Rainbow Obsidian

Obsidian was not included in most early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. Obsidian is however included in most modern lapidaries, with many describing the various types of Obsidian including Apache TearBlackMahogany, Rainbow and Snowflake, as well as various Sheen Obsidian, such as Golden Sheen or Red Sheen.

Healing Properties of Rainbow Obsidian

Spiritual: Rainbow Obsidian acts as a bridge between the dark and light places inside of us, making it a powerful crystal ally whenever we are ready to do important personal work.  Rainbow Obsidian offers us safe passage and guidance into those dark parts of ourselves that most scare us so that we can find and process any pain that is trapped there.  It also helps us to find the lost parts of ourselves so we can heal and reclaim them.  Like all varieties of Obsidian, it is a stone of truth which shows us the true nature of reality.  But while regular Obsidian can reveal the truth harshly in a naked light, Rainbow Obsidian reveals the truth more gently so that we can more easily process and understand it.  Rainbow Obsidian clears the aura and other energy fields of any stagnate or negative energy that has gotten trapped within.  It is attuned to the Root Chakra in particular, but can be used to cleanse all the Charkas and linked to the astrological sign of Libra.  It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the number 2.

Emotional: Rainbow Obsidian shows us how to navigate affairs of the heart with ease and optimism.  It helps us to recognize the truth about ourselves and about other people, so that we can make good emotional choices.  Rainbow Obsidian can be used to attract a new romantic relationship.  It can also be used to cut emotional ties that link us to old romances.  By cutting these ties, we can then look back upon old relationships fondly but move forward into new relationships that may bring greater joy to our hearts.  Rainbow Obsidian lifts away depression by helping us focus our attention on the present moment and future opportunities, rather than dwelling on the past.  When we are suffering from intense mood-swings, Rainbow Obsidian can help us to ground down and find the correct mood that best matches our current circumstances.

Mental: Rainbow Obsidian help us think logically and clearly about our problems, especially complex emotional issues.  It helps us to recognize what is actually true, rather than stubbornly focusing on what we wish was true.  Rainbow Obsidian also helps us to get out of our heads and start actively participating in life.  It encourages us to to take pleasure in the world around us and to never miss an opportunity to celebrate good times.

Physical: Rainbow Obsidian is used by metaphysical healers to treat broken bones, bruised muscles and the physical heart.  It is said to be an especially useful tool for treating stress-created diseases and to ease general tension in the body.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These Rainbow Obsidians were  mined in Mexico and tumbled in the United States.

I first encountered the US wholeseller at the 2015 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Right away I was impressed with the quality of the tumbled stones, and especially the appearance of hard-to-find tumbled stones such as Rainbow Obsidian. After talking with the owner, who self-proclaims herself “the Tumbled Queen,” I was even more pleased. The Tumbled Queen knows her stock inside and out and we happily discussed the geology and origins of various rare minerals.

It would be my pleasure to pick a beautiful Rainbow Obsidian for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone.

You can buy a single tumbled Rainbow Obsidian or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Rainbow Obsidian measures approximately 3/4 of an inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be a rounded black stone with green and/or purple whirls and eyes. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their beautiful color and clean energies, these tumbled Rainbow Obsidian are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

Safe Handling of Rainbow Obsidian

Obsidian is a type of natural glass and so can easily break or chip! They should not be casually carried in a pocket or in a medicine bag. They are best kept as collectors pieces or on an altar, handling with care.

The Rainbow colors on the Obsidian can fade if it is left expose to sunlight for an extended period of time.  It is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

Good to Know:

Rainbow Obsidian can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.

Rainbow Obsidian can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.

Tumbled and fully smooth Rainbow Obsidian can be safely used to make direct-infusion “Rainbow Obsidian Water” for drinking or bathing. Before making any direct-infusion elixir ALWAYS check the mineralogical properties of the stone to ensure it is not toxic. Only use fully tumbled stones or natural Quartz points in direct-infusion elixirs, never rough stones. When in doubt, make an indirect-infusion elixir instead.
