Mineral Family: Kunzite is the gemstone crystals of Spodumene, a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. One way the tetrahedra can connect is in long single chains, and it is to this group that Kunzite belongs. Other famous minerals in the single-chain group are Astrophyllite, Diopside, Jadite, Nuumite and Rhodonite.

Associated Minerals: AquamarineLepidolite, Petalite, Quartz, Spessartine Garnet

Formation: Kunzite grows in lithium-bearing granite pegmatite dikes.

Mining: Spodumene is usually a grey or colorless, dull, opaque mineral and widely mined as a major source of lithium. Occasionally a Spodumene crystals, or Kunzite, is found and sold to collectors. In Southern California there are mines whose primary purpose is to extract Kunzite.

Enhancements: Kunzites may be irradiated to bring out a brighter, more intense color.  This is usually done for green or bright yellow Kunzites.  Pink/purple or Pale Golden Kunzites may be considered fully natural and enhanced only by cutting, tumbling, and polishing.

Synonyms:  Spudumene, Triphane (Gold Kunzite), Hiddenite (Green Kunzite)

History of Kunzite

Spodumene

Spodumene, Walnut Hill, Massachusetts, USA

Kunzite is the gemstone variety of the mineral Spodumene. It is a relatively “new” stone to the metaphysical community and so is not included in any old lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their power.

Spodumene was first described in 1800 by the Brazilian naturalist, Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva (1763-1838). The original mineral was opaque and grey, and came from a deposit in Sweden. It came to Andrada e Silva’s attention while he was working as professor of geology at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. He named it Spodumene, from the Greek spodumenos, or “burnt to ashes,” on account of that particular mineral’s ash-grey color.

hiddenite

Hiddenite, Rist Mine, North Carolina, USA

In 1879, Hiddenite, the green variety of Spodumene was found in North Carolina, USA. It was originally thought to be a translucent gemmy Diopside, but was soon correctly identified. The gems were given the name Hiddenite, in honor of William Earl Hidden (1853-1918), the first geologist to study them.

TiffanyKunzite, the pink, purple, clear, and golden gem varieties were first discovered in 1902 in the Pala Mountains of San Diego, California, USA. The gemstone was named Kunzite after George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), the chief jeweler of Tiffany and Company, and author of the book, The Gems and Precious Stones of North America. To this day, many of the finest Kunzites are owned by Tiffany and Co., who cut and mount the gemstones in fine jewelry. The best of these stones are equal in price to that of Diamonds, Emeralds or Rubies.

Healing Properties of Kunzite

Spiritual: Kunzite joyful sings that we are loved and that we are meant to be happy and whole. It helps us to recognize that the Divine is everywhere; within us and within every soul we meet.  It sweetly reminds us that we are connected to every part of creation, from the farthest away star to the smallest insect buzzing in our garden, and we are an integral part of the Great Song.  It helps us to live with both confidence and humility in perfect balance, and celebrates with us whenever we dare to be true to ourselves.  Kunzite encourages us to be kind and generous, and to live from the heart.  It deepens meditation, raises our energetic frequency and protect us from unwanted energies and influences.  Kunzite is attuned to the Heart and Crown Chakras and linked to Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio.  It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 7.

Emotional: Kunzite vibrates with an incredibly peaceful and loving energy.  It dissolves negative feelings and removes any resistance we might feel towards activities that are for our own emotional healing and growth.  Kunzite invites us to love ourselves better and to actively show this self-love in our actions and words.  Kunzite teaches us that love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but rather a way of life and a ongoing practice.  Kunzite can be used to attract our soul mates and other key partnerships, as well as to heal heartache from past relationships.  It motivates us to be more tolerant of others, while also having healthy boundaries.  Kunzite encourages us to continually strive to be a better friend, family member, and all-around better human being.    Kunzite vibrates with the essence of pure love and invites us to become the Highest Version of ourselves in our everyday life and interactions.

Mental: Kunzite helps us to stay calm and collected, regardless of our circumstances.  It combines our intellect with intuition, and logic with our heart’s “inner knowing.”  Kunzite can help us to accept constructive criticism as a helpful gift, rather than a rejection of who we currently are   It also helps us to remove mental blocks and obstacles that seemingly prevent us from moving forward towards our goals and along our path.  Kunzite helps us to think of solutions, rather than dwell on problems.  It asks us to always think, “what would Love do?”

Physical: Kunzite eases stress and is said to support the parasympathetic nervous system. It is most often used by metaphysical healers to treat blocks in our organs and to dissolve clots in our circulatory system. It is believed to be a wonderful healer for the physical heart, and to help balance the hormones that affect our emotions.  Kunzite is said to be particularly good for restructuring our DNA and our health at the most basic level.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

This stone was mined in Madagascar and tumbled in South Africa.

I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Kunzite for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone. You can buy a single Pink/Purple Kunzite or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Kunzite measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be rounded in shape and have a transparent purple color, very clear AA grade! If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their subtle shimmer and clean energies, these Kunzites are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

Safe Handling of Kunzite

Caution!!!

Kunzite will gradually lose its color over time if left in direct sunlight. It is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.

Kunzite is a fragile stone that can easily break or chip! They should not be casually carried in a pocket or in a medicine bag. They are best kept as collectors pieces or on an altar, handling with care.

Kunzite contains aluminum and as such should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “Kunzite Water” for drinking or bathing. Having too much aluminum in the body is toxic, and drinking direct-infusion elixirs of aluminum-derived stones is dangerous. You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.

Good To Know:

Kunzites can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.

Kunzite can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.

Julie is amazing and so are her crystals! I loved emailing with her about how I would use the stones and the particular shade of kunzite I hoped to get. Many online sellers “intuitively” choose your stones (randomly!) but Julie really does take the time to pick them for you, as if she were picking out just the right gift for a friend. It’s so great to know that none of these stones were mined by children or exploited workers. Her caring really comes through. Do not miss ordering from Moonrise!
