Rock Family: Pink Tourmaline Quartz is technically a rock, rather than a mineral. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In this case, two Silicate minerals are involved, Clear Quartz and Rubellite (Pink/Red Tourmaline).
Formation: Tourmaline and Quartz are both formed in igneous rocks. In this case, the Tourmaline grows first, and then the Quartz crystal grows around and eventually engulfs the Tourmaline crystal. Enclosed crystals in Quartz are sometimes called inclusions, or more properly, protogenetic minerals.
Mining: Tourmaline is a fairly common mineral, but gem quality crystals are relatively rare, and found almost exclusively in Pegmatite. Numerous mines exist whose primary purpose is finding gem-quality Tourmaline. Pink Tourmaline Quartz are a secondary stone found in such mines.
Enhancements: Synthetic Tourmaline exist, but are typically used for research purposes and are not readily available to the general public. On occasion Tourmaline may be heat treated to lighten its color, for example, a dark green Tourmaline may be heat treated to create a lighter emerald color. Heat treated Tourmaline are used primarily in the fine gem industry. That being said, all Black Tourmaline Quartz can be considered fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting and polishing.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
