Healing Properties of Morion Quartz
Spiritual: Morion Quartz is a stone which promises us that we are stronger and more resilient than we know. It gives us support during hard times and increases our ability to handle stress and great sorrow. It can also help us to stay grounded when working with high-vibration energies. It is particularly helpful for Shamans and holistic healers who want to utilize powerful energies better and bring them down into our physical bodies. Morion Quartz has strong protective and purifying properties, and reminds us to be discerning and careful about who we claim as our spiritual teachers and associates. Morion Quartz is attuned to the Root and Solar Plexus Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Sagittarius, Capricorn. It is connected to the element of Earth and vibrates to the numbers 2 and 8.
Emotional: Morion Quartz has a grounding and relaxing energy that is particularly helpful during times of high-stress. It helps us to focus on solutions to our problems, rather than dwelling on our current emotional state. Morion Quartz can be a gentle companion for anyone suffering from depression. It helps us to engage more with the world around us and to feel how blessed we are to be alive, here and now. It slowly but surely, helps to dissolve negative energies and blocks which cause us pain. Morion Quartz shows us how to live in balance and to live in the Now.
Mental: Morion Quartz helps us to look at the world and ourselves realistically and pragmatically. To “call a spade, a spade” and not worry about what is. Morion Quartz encourages us to concentrate on problem-solving and appropriate actions. It helps us to set aside emotions that are not helpful. These emotions won’t just be buried, ready to come back out later. Instead, Morion Quartz allows us to simply acknowledge the emotions for what they are, and come to peace with them without needing to further process through them. Morion Quartz is excellent for preventing nightmares. It is also an excellent talisman for business people and can also help us to be more cooperative and to act as team-players.
Physical: Morion Quartz has been used by metaphysical healers to heal illnesses caused by chronic stress. It is believed to help protect us from radiation, and so is often carried by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It is also commonly used for protection from electromagnetic fields. Morion Quartz is said to help with back problems and to help heal conditions in the hands and feet.

Mineralogy of Morion Quartz
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Color: Brown, grey or black
Crystal System: Hexagonal/trigonal
Fracture: Conchoidal, very brittle
Location: Morion Quartz is a name given to the darkest Smoky Quartz which has been naturally-irradiated. Smoky Quartz is found in many locations around the world, but Morion Quartz is usually found in Austria, Australia, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, and the United States (California and Colorado).
Mineral Family: Morion Quartz is the darkest variety of Smoky Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz, or Rock Crystal. Purple Quartz is Amethyst. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Pink Quartz is Rose Quartz. Brown/Black Quartz is Smoky Quartz.
Formation: Morion Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz. Smoky Quartz’s color comes from being naturally irradiated.
Mining: Morion Quartz is typically found near or within Amethyst mines, and so is mined as a secondary mineral.
Enhancements: Smoky Quartz can be artificially created by treating clear Quartz or less-valuable shades of Smoky Quartz with radium or x-rays, a process which will further irradiate the stone and bring out a more valuable shade of brown or dark grey. To be considered Morion Quartz, the dark color has to be naturally-present.

History of Morion Quartz
Morion Quartz is a type of Smoky Quartz. The name “Morion” is the German, Polish and Portuguese word for Smoky Quartz. It is based on the Latin word mōrion, which in turn is a misreading of the world mormorion, used by Pliny the Elder (23 -79 CE) to describe an unidentified dark crystal. The name Smoky Quartz is popularly used worldwide, but in fact only dates back to 1837. Generally speaking, the term Smoky Quartz and is used to describe any Quartz ranging from light grey to rich brown. By contrast, the name Morion Quartz is used only for the darkest browns and blacks.

Learn More: Ethical Lapidary
I first met this source at the 2020 Tucson Gem Show. I was surprised to see a sign that advertised “ethical sourcing” and immediately went to investigate. I discovered a family business, run by a father, mother and sons who live in Brazil. The business is over 30 years old and originally was much like any other. But the wife/mother soon became concerned about the conditions in Brazilian mines and polishing factories, and their effect on local communities. She gradually transformed the business following the principles of Fair Trade and articulated her own ethical commitments. Among these commitments are: to be environmentally friendly, work with miners coops, have a participatory workplace, develop long-term relationships, sponsoring education for miners’ children, and respect cultural identities.
I had a long conversation with this inspiring woman, discussing both our own businesses as well as the larger industry. We already shared many of the same ethical commitments. But I was intrigued by her commitment to respecting cultural identities. In Brazil, much of the land where the mines are located are owned by indigenous peoples. But oftentimes miners are from somewhere else, and usually don’t have any vested interest in protecting the local environment or distributing wealth into the local economy. To respect cultural identities means to do business with local indigenous peoples, rather that transient outsiders.
