Most Coral farmed for commercial purposes is grown in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States.Red Coral Mining Locations

Mineral Family: Red Coral is not a mineral at all, but rather the dried remains of Corallium rubrum and several related species of marine coral. When dried, this bright red or pink Coral has an unusually hard shape which has been used to make jewelry for centuries. Live Coral is often venomous and so care should be taken if using Coral for healing purposes.

Associated Minerals/Corals: Blue Coral

Formation: Red Coral is a living creature which grows on rocky sea bottoms with low sedimentation. Unlike many other types of Coral, Red Coral grows in dark environments, either deep underwater (up to 1500 meters below sea level) or in dark crevices and caves.

Mining: These Red Corals were grown in an Aquaculture, rather than harvested from the wild. Aquaculture is an underwater form of agriculture, also known as coral farming or coral gardening. The Corals are grown in nurseries for the specific purpose of supplying the live coral and ornamental coral trades. Aquaculture is more than just a financial farming practice, it is also instrumental for teaching us how best to grow, maintain and help preserve wild corals.

History of Red Coral

red coral 1 1600x1200Coral is not a mineral, bur rather a marine invertebrate which typically lives in compact colonies, some of which form ocean reefs. Corals secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton, which under the right circumstances can be dried and preserved. While many dried Corals are soft and fragile, a few such as Corallium rubrum, which is native to the Mediterranean Sea, are hard enough when dried to be used for jewelry and talismans. The vivid red coloring of Corallium rubrum has made it a popular and precious “gemstone” for thousands of years. This popularity meant it was included in many of the earliest known lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.

The legendary Greek poet, Orpheus, wrote that Coral was a “gift of Athena” (the goddess of wisdom and handicrafts). Orpheus is credited with writing the Orphic Hymns (6th century BCE) which describe some of the great Greek myths. Cellini's Perseus with the Head of MedusaIn one of them the poems state that Red Coral, “originated when the newly-severed Gorgon’s head [Medusa] was laid down by Perseus on the sea-weeds, which the issuing gore turned to stone.” The poems later go on to state that Coral is the “farmer’s friend” and when mixed with seeds can protect crops from dangerous insects, diseases and storms. It could also be used to prevent witchcraft, counteract poisons, and protect against robbers. Four hundred years later, the ancient Greek lapidary, The Virtue of Stones, by Damigeron, likewise stated that Coral, “makes him who wears it unconquerable, powerful, unable to be touched, free from fear and care, giving orders easily and having easy access to the great.”

During the Roman Era, Pliny the Elder (CE 23-79), a Roman author, naturalist, and philosopher also mentioned Red Coral in his Natural HistoryHe wrote that Coral could protect sailors from storms at sea as well as from lightning strikes; while drinking powdered Coral mixed with water or wine was believed to protect against all evils. But beware, he cautioned, if the Coral was broken unintentionally, it could then lose all its potency. Roman physicians routinely proscribed Coral medicines. One popular elixir was made by boiling Coral in melted wax and then steeping the resulting mixture in alcohol. This potion was meant to increase perspiration to treat fevers and other “bad humors.” Another remedy called for poultice of Coral and saffron wrapped in the skin of a cat and tied around the patient’s neck. This strange poultice supposedly had marvelous healing properties, particularly for reducing fevers. When Emerald was added to it, the power was said to be magnified.

A millennium later, Coral was similarly included in many medieval European lapidaries. For example, during the 13th century, Albertus Magnus claimed to have definitive proof that Coral could slow the flow of blood, cure madness, bring wisdom, and allow the bearer to be safe from storms and to cross seas and rivers confidently. The 16th century Speculum Lapidum, states that carrying Coral, “drives away ghosts, hobgoblins, illusions, dreams, lightning, wind and tempests.” Because of its color, Red Coral was often closely associated with blood. According to one European tradition, a necklace of Red Coral, a pater de sang, or blood rosary should be worn as protection against hemorrhaging. While another medieval European tradition claimed that Red Coral changed its color in accordance with a woman’s monthly cycle. As a result, women with Red Coral jewelry or talismans were advised to keep them hidden from men for modesty’s sake. This folklore was widely believed as late as the early Twentieth century. Today, Red Coral is often referred to as the blood of Mother Earth.

Tibetan jewelryUntil the advent of Coral aquaculture, most Red Corals were harvested from the Mediterranean Sea. Some of these Corals then traveled back along the Silk Road to Asia. Ancient Vedic texts record the origin story of many gemstones including Coral. According to legend, long ago the demon, Vala, took the form of a stone cave where stolen cows were hidden. Indra, the leader of the demigods, split Vala apart, killing him and freeing the cows. Vala’s body was scattered across the earth and his various body parts were transformed into gems. His intestines were thrown in the water, where they became Coral reefs. According to Marco Polo, Red Coral jewelry was very popular in the Himalayas, particularly throughout Tibet. Its color corresponds with one of the Buddha’s incarnations, making it an especially desirable commodity for Lamas. Among modern Tibetans, Red Coral and Blue Turquoise are often paired together for striking jewelry and decorative items.

Coral has a special glamour for desert peoples. It has long been prized by Arab peoples, who often used it as funerary ornaments. According to Persian lore, true Coral always smelled of the sea and only gained its vivid coloring and mystical powers after being removed from the water. ZuniRed Coral was introduced to Native Americans by Spanish explorers and it was soon particularly popular among the southwestern Hopi and Zuni tribes. Among desert tribes, water is the most precious commodity, and so anything associated with water, including Coral and seashells, is often considered particularly precious.

Healing Properties of Red Coral

Spiritual:  Red Coral invites us to explore our true selves deeply and honestly, without false humility or blustering ego. It dares us to claim our most authentic spiritual and personal power – to stand out from the crowd and be who we truly are. Red Coral teaches us that when we are strong and independent we are also in the best position to serve others, and create healthy interdependence.  It helps us to visualize our goals and understand both the practical and spiritual steps that are necessary in order to reach them.  Red Coral reminds us that every action, no matter how mundane, has a spiritual aspect to it.  As such, we can gradually learn how each movement is a form of prayer and every moment an act of devotion, and thus an opportunity to put forth our best self and to live fully alive.  Red Coral is attuned to the Root and Sacral Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Libra. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 4 and 22.

Emotional: Red Coral soothes and quiets turbulent emotions. It reminds us to breathe deeply and to step back and look at the situation logically and from a neutral mind. Red Coral offers protection and healing from the ravages of depression and anxiety. It is a phenomenal tool to use when working on First Chakra issues, which encompasses all of our most basic physical and emotional needs. Red Coral helps us to stay focused on those actions which strengthen our basic foundation. It encourages us to acknowledge our emotions, but to not let them run away with us.  Red Coral also helps us to explore any negative emotional beliefs we may have around money, love or safely.  It helps us to root out the original idea that made us think we weren’t worthy of good things, and to replace it with new ideas, ones which attract and cultivate true joy and abundance.

Mental: Red Coral has a unique energy that is both highly spiritual while also profoundly practical. This combined energy helps us to find balance in our own lives and to veer away from extreme actions and beliefs which do not serve us. Red Coral helps us to be in touch and trust our inherent common sense and to put that sense into action. It encourages us to routinely check in with ourselves to be sure that our thoughts, words and actions are consistent with our values. Taking it a step further, we are asked to check to make sure our values are in alignment with the Highest Good of all beings and our planet.  Red Coral is particularly good for entrepreneurs and business owners, helping us to ensure that our business is in alignment with our personal beliefs, and is a force of good in this world, giving as much or more, than it takes.

Physical: Red Coral is said to help reduce heartburn and treat colic, as well as severe cases of the hiccups. It is also believed to stimulate the metabolism and increase physical energy. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to treat kidney and bladder disorders, as well as strengthening the skeletal system, particularly the spine.  Red Coral is said to nourish red blood cells and encourage a healthy immune system.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These tumbled Red Corals were grown and tumbled in Hong Kong.

I first met the Hong Kong tumbling company at the 2014 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Despite their beautiful tumbled stones, I was reluctant at first to buy from them. A particular concern was their tumbled coral, which I feared was illegally harvested from the wild. When I asked them, they told me their coral was actually grown in an aquaculture (for more information about aquaculture, see the Mineralogy tab). After our conversation, I purchased from the tumbling company with confidence.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Red Coral for you.

Your stone

Coral, RedThis price is for one stone.

You can buy a single Red Coral or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Red Coral measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their natural beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips and cracks, and be a round red-orange Coral with soft, organic patterns. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their distinctive pattern and clean energies, these Red Coral are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

Safe Handling of Red Coral

Caution!

Many types of Coral are poisonous and as such should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “Coral Water” for drinking or bathing.  You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.

Good To Know:

Red Corals can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.

Red Coral can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.

Red Corals can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing their color. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
