Healing Properties of Red Jasper
Spiritual: Red Jasper is a dynamic stone that unites courage and strength with love and gentleness. Its energy is like that of a beloved father, protective and nurturing towards his children. It can help us feel safe and secure enough in our physical selves that we dare to more fully explore our spiritual selves. Red Jasper also helps us to ‘grow up’ in our spiritual and earthly lives, teaching us to take responsibility for our choices, and the results that follow. Red Jaspers can be used to activate the Kundalini energy, which in turn can spark a powerful spiritual experience. It likewise can help us in dream recall and analysis, showing us the practical meaning behind our sleeping dreams and how we can use that information to improve our waking life. Red Jasper is attuned to the Sacral and Root Chakras and linked to the astrological signs Taurus and Leo. It is connected to the Element of Earth and vibrates to the number 6.
Emotional: Red Jasper offers support during stressful periods and reminds us to help each other. It also inspires us to be courageous and to dare to have authentic and honest relationships. Red Jasper can also be used to heal misguided feelings of shame and guilt which may surround sexual issues or sexual abuse. It reminds us that sexual energy is a creative force that can and should be joyful. It is also a wonderful stone for anyone who needs to work through father-figure issues. In a more general sense, Red Jasper can help us to break out of any existing “victim mentality” and “victim pattern”. Teaching us how to save ourselves when we are endangered and to make better choices in the future to avoid bad situations. Red Jasper helps us to pick ourselves back up, when we have had a set-back and to try again. It helps us to trust ourselves and have faith that all will be well, in the end.
Mental: Red Jasper encourages us to be honest and to live honorably. It helps us speak honestly and “walk our talk.” Red Jasper is a stone of discipline and focus. It is especially helpful for artists and entrepreneurs who may find it difficult to finish projects or try to go into many directions at once. Red Jasper encourages us to stay inspired and excited about our work and to methodically do what needs to be done. By inspiring us to be brave, Red Jasper helps us to deal with our fear of failure as well as our fear of success. Red Jasper’s energy is highly practical and can be especially encouraging to work with when we are faced with long-term tasks that bore us or stress us out, but nevertheless need our time and attention.
Physical: Red Jasper is believed to stimulate internal blood flow and ease external bleeding. It is commonly used to treat the sexual organs and to help stabilize pregnancy. Red Jasper is also said to be useful for regaining physical strength after an illness. Body builders have used Red Jasper to help increase muscle mass during periods of intense training. It is also used to stabilize fragile pregnancies and to ensure healthy fetuses.

Mineralogy of Red Jasper
Mineral Family: Tectosilicates
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/trigonal
Location: Jasper is found throughout the world. The most notable deposits for Red Jasper are found in Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Namibia, Peru, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa and the United States (notably: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico).
Mineral Family: True Jasper is a Silicate mineral. However, “jasper” is a term that is often used to describe any spotted stone. As such many varieties of spotted Rhyolite, a type of igneous rock, are misrepresented as Jaspers, for example, “Ocean Jasper” or “Leopardskin Jasper.” From a geological point of view, only spotted microcrystline Quartz may be properly referred to as Jasper. True Jasper is a tiny twig on a far off branch of the crystal tree, scientifically it is a “subdivision of a subdivision of a subdivision, of a subdivision of a subdivision!” Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedra – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the three corners. These tetrahedras connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right, and has two main subdivisions, macrocrystalline (crystals that are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, for example, Amethyst) and microcrystalline (crystals so small they can only be seen through a microscope, for example Agate). All microcrystalline Quartz fall under the subcategory of Chalcedony, which is then further subdivided. One of these categories is Jasper. Red Jasper is distinguished by its solid red color.
Formation: True Jasper is opaque Quartz with numerous inclusions. Clear Quartz forms when silica acid solidifies in igneous rocks. Jasper, by contrast, forms when silica acid penetrates clay or sand, and solidifies in sedimentary rocks. Where the silica acid cools it hardens into Quartz, but with the addition of millions of tiny particles of sand, clay, and other minerals. These inclusions give Jasper their brilliant colors and random markings. Red Jasper is a true jasper in which the overwhelmingly dominate color is a brick red.
Mining: Typically mined from the primary deposits which still have their original relationship with the host rock.
Enhancements: All Jaspers are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Red Jasper
The name “Jasper” is a generic name given to any spotted stone as well as most semi-transparent or opaque Chalcedony. As a result, it can be difficult to know exactly which stone is being referenced in ancient and medieval writings. Brecciated Jasper may be considered a form of Red Jasper.
Red Jasper has long been credited for its supposed ability to stop hemorrhages and reduce pulse rate. In 1636, the Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia described how a young woman was cured from chronic hemorrhaging by wearing Red Jasper. During the Middle Ages, Red Jasper was also considered a stone for warriors and was said to increase their strength and courage. According to legend, a piece of Red Jasper was set on the hilt of ‘Balmung,’ the legendary sword of the Norse hero Siegfried.

I first spoke to the manager of the export company after finding them online in early 2017 and met the manager in person at the Denver Gem Show later that year. I was cautious about doing business with them since they are the exporter, rather than the miners or tumblers. But I studied their company and was pleased by their dedication to environmentalism. They focus on exporting Fair Trade, Consciously-Made, and No-Harm Peruvian handicrafts. They also have worked to reduce their carbon footprint in their wholesale warehouse.
In 2019, I had a long conversation with the manager about ethical topics in the stone industry. She was willing to speak candidly about both the positives and the negatives. She also shared how she personally struggled with the ethical issues and her part in the supply chain. Whenever a shipment of goods arrives from Peru, she insists on smudging every box before it is brought into the factory. The manager introduced me to the mother of the current owner. A tiny woman, less than 5 ft tall, she was happy to reminisce with me about how she started the company more than 30 years ago. She had been a young immigrant mother, searching for a new life. Her nephew, back in Peru, shipped her a few buckets of Pyrite and asked her to see if she could sell them. She laughed to remember those days and radiated happiness and gratitude. Today, the business is run by her son and his cousin in Peru.
