Mineralogy of Red Sheen Obsidian
Rock Family: Igneous Rock
Major Mineral: Volcanic Glass
Minor Minerals: Feldspar, Hematite
Color: Black, gray
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Obsidian is found all over the world; however, most of the sheen and rainbow Obsidian on the market comes from Mexico and the United States (Oregon).
Rock Family: Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Black Obsidian, it is an igneous rock made of pure black volcanic glass.
Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, however the inclusion of various minerals can create opaque colored varieties such Mahogany Obsidian or Snowflake Obsidian. Othertimes, Obsidian has a colorful sheen that appears when moved in the light. This effect is usually created by small inclusions of waver vapor bubbles trapped in the glass. These bubbles have been stretched nearly flat in a series of layers which reflect back light with a metallic glow. Examples of this include: Golden Sheen Obsidian, Silver Sheen Obsidian and Red Sheen Obsidian.
Mining: Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract. It is much prized by indigenous cultures for crafting weapons, tools, and ornaments.
Enhancements: All Obsidians are fully natural, enhanced only through tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

By contrast, Obsidian is included in most modern lapidaries, with some describing the various types of Obsidian, including Apache Tear, Black, Mahogany, Snowflake, and various Sheens, such as Rainbow or Red.

Healing Properties of Red Sheen Obsidian
Spiritual: Red Sheen Obsidian has a bright and vibrant energy, very different than pure black Obsidian. It is an empowering stone that awakens our hidden talents and best qualities. Red Sheen Obsidian is a stone of Truth, bluntly revealing to us what is real and what is false, without pretense or apology. It can help us to “wake up” and to understand what is really happening in the world around us, and to face that reality without fear or denial. It invites us to rise up to any challenge, and to make a positive difference in whatever way we are most able. Red Sheen Obsidian helps us to balance our male/female energies and to know when to be fierce and when to be gentle. It invites us to live life more fully alive, and to not waste a single moment of this precious gift. Red Sheen Obsidian is attuned to the Root and Sacral Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Leo and Sagittarius. It is attuned to the element of Earth and vibrates to the numbers 1 and 3.
Emotional: Red Sheen Obsidian is a phenomenal stone for emotional grounding. It keeps us from flying off into negative emotional extremes, inviting us instead to pause for a moment and think critically. This can be useful in many circumstances, but especially for anyone who suffers from depression or anxiety, or has a habit of negative thinking. Anyone familiar with Bryon Katie’s “The Work” will greatly enjoy this crystal’s very practical emotional energy. Red Sheen Obsidian encourages us to ask ourselves, “Is this true?” and to really consider that question deeply. Sometimes our thoughts/beliefs are not true, and Red Sheen Obsidian can help us to discover those lies and to be open to new truths. It gives us courage and strength to solve our own problems and helps us to create a life that is based on truth, peace, and joy.
Mental: Red Sheen Obsidian sharpens our intellect and encourages us to see through our own biases. It asks us to ignore the smokescreens that may be used to distract us from the truth, and instead to dare to “pay attention to the man behind the curtain” and understand what is really going on. Red Sheen Obsidian is particularly good for satirists who discuss important topics in humorous ways and gently reveal how ridiculous certain behaviors and beliefs are. Red Sheen Obsidian reminds us that we can tackle serious topics and solve serious problems, without giving up our sense of humor or our ability to laugh at ourselves. It teaches us that to laugh in the darkness, is the best way to keep hope alive, and that in turn leads to real solutions.
Physical: Red Sheen Obsidian is often used by metaphysical healers to help relieve pain and to treat disorders associated with our blood or the circulatory system. It is a wonderful stone for yogis to work with, as well as anyone who wants to improve physical flexibility and balance. It is also said to bring healing to the spleen and increase physical vitality. Like other types of Obsidian, Red Sheen can help both the healer and the person being healed to have a clearer understanding about the root cause of any discomfort and the best way to treat it.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show. They carry a wide-variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare. The tumbled Celestite and specialty Obsidian particularly caught my eye, since no other source carries them. The owners are a married couple, he takes care of their larger stones, while she is the self-proclaimed, “Tumbled Stone Queen.” The Queen knows her stock inside and out and we’ve spoken in person and by phone about the geology and origins of various minerals.
The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause. I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions for the countries in question.
