Healing Properties of Red Tigers Eye
Spiritual: Red Tigers Eye helps us to link our physical body with our spiritual beliefs. It encourages us to “sweat our prayers” through dance, feats of athleticism, Tantric sex, and other physical activities. It teaches us to trust our bodies, especially the good instincts we can feel in our gut. Red Tigers Eye reminds us that how we live in our everyday lives is our true religion and how we conduct the most mundane activities is an expression of our soul’s health and strength. This shimmering stone gently but firmly dares us to live empowered and fully alive to the beauty of the present moment. Red Tigers Eye is attuned to the Root, Sacral, and Solar Plexus Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Capricorn. It is connected to the elements of Fire and Earth and vibrates to the number 4.
Emotional: Red Tigers Eye brings gifts of confidence and self-awareness. It shows us how to make new friends easily and how to keep our relationships strong and healthy. It helps us to recognize and respectfully acknowledge our own wants and needs, as well as those of others. Red Tigers Eye is a wonderful crystal ally when we are faced with changing circumstances and feeling nervous about what the future might be hold. It soothes our nerves and encourages us to have faith in ourselves and to trust that everything will be alright. Red Tigers Eye is also particularly helpful for anyone suffering from issues related to body image. Red Tigers Eye helps us to see ourselves more accurately, assessing our natural beauty and strength and ignoring society’s current ideals. It also helps us to explore issues around guilt and shame associated with sexuality and sensuality. Red Tigers Eye celebrates the body and its urges us to do the same with joy and courage!
Mental: Red Tigers Eye is a wonderful balancing stone, helping us to see things clearly and not go to extremes. Its energy is exceptionally practical and full of common sense, and can help to calm down emotional excesses. Red Tigers Eye helps us to see the middle path, and the common ground between ideas and people, and to bridge those differences for the Highest Good of all concerned. It is particularly good for helping us to navigate the sometimes treacherous waters caused by family discords or arguments over finances.
Physical: Red Tigers Eye is said to help stimulate the metabolism and aid in weight loss. It is commonly used by metaphysical healers to increase libido and to treat physical problems which manifest as a result of sexual trauma and abuse. It is also believed to help fortify the blood and regulate hormones.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Red Tigers Eye
Mineral Family: Tectosilace
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/Trigonal
Streak: White, yellow-brown
Location: The most important Tigers Eye deposits are in South Africa. Additional deposits are in Australia, Burma, India, Namibia, and the United States (California).
Mineral Family: Red Tigers Eye is a rare Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Tigers Eye is a semi-precious variety of Quartz that exhibits chatoyancy, or a vertical luminescent band. Most Tigers Eye is golden-brown, but it can also be red or blue. When it is combined with silver Hematite, it is called Tiger Iron.
Formation: Tigers Eye is formed when Quartz replaces the mineral Crocidolite (blue asbestos). As the Crocidolite decomposes, Iron is exposed and oxidized which transforms it into Limonite. Tigers Eye is essentially Limonite fibers embedded in Clear Quartz. Early in the process, the stone is blue, and is often called Hawks Eye (or Blue Tigers Eye). As the process continues, the blue is gradually replaced by gold, and the stone is then called Gold Tigers Eye. If the Gold Tigers Eye is then heated, either by natural causes or artificially by humans, the stone’s color may become red, at which point it is called Red Tigers Eye.
Mining: Tigers Eye is mined from its primary deposit, which is located in metamorphic rock. Tigers Eye is mined in an open pit setting, since Tigers Eye is found directly under the soil.
Enhancements: Most Red Tigers Eye on the market have been created by heat-treating Gold Tigers Eye stones. While Red Tigers Eye does occur naturally, it is much more rare.
History of Red Tigers Eye
Red Tigers Eye is a relatively “new” healing stone whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. As a result, it was not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. The name Tigers Eye is a reference to the distinctive luminescent stripes that makes this stone so easy to identify.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
