Mineralogy of Rhodonite Quartz
Color: Reddish-pink, black and clear
Luminescence: Red (long wave)
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Rhodonite Quartz is occasionally found in pure Rhodonite deposits. Rhodonite deposits are found in Australia, Canada, Finland, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Sweden, South Africa, Tanzania, and the United States (New Jersey). The Rhodonite deposits in Madagascar have a particularly vivid hot pink color.
Rock Family: Rhodonite Quartz is technically a rock, rather than a mineral. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In this case, three minerals are typically involved, Clear Quartz, pink Rhodonite, and black Manganese
Formation: Rhodonite is formed during the metamorphosis of sedimentary manganese ore deposits, a process which creates the rose color. If the rose colored stone is then partially oxidized through weathering it creates black patches and veins of manganese dioxide. Clear Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz. In the case of Rhodonite Quartz, the Rhodonite forms first, is weathered, and then Clear Quartz forms around it.
Mining: Typically mined in various manganese ores, often in association with pure Rhodonite.
Enhancements: All available Rhodonite Quartz are natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Rhodonite Quartz
Rhodonite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Despite being a very pretty and easily recognizable stone, it has very little history attached to it. The name Rhodonite comes from the Greek word rhodon, or rose.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
