Rock Family: Ruby Zoisite is not a single mineral, but rather a rock. As an easy way to understand the difference, think of rocks as being like cookies and minerals as being the ingredients which make up those cookies. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Ruby Zoisite, typically three minerals are present, green Zoisite, red Corundum (Ruby), and black/dark green Pargasite.
Formation: Ruby Zoisite is a type of metamorphic rock created by regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration. Both Zoisite and Rubies are formed during the metamorphic process, and in rare cases may naturally fuse together into a single stone (along with black Pargasite). Regional metamorphism occurs when there is a collision between tectonic plates, causing geological changes over a large area. Hydrothermal alteration happens when underground water is heated up to incredibly high temperatures. The hot water flows through minerals, leaving traces of other minerals in its wake, which can then grow in combination over time. Ruby Zoisite is found within gneiss rocks found in the ancient Mozambique Collision Belt.
Mining: Mined at its primary deposit, the principal purpose being to mine gem-quality Rubies. However, beautiful specimens of Ruby Zoisite are also gathered. Most of the Ruby Zoisite on the market was mined near the small town of Longido, in the Arusha Region of northeastern Tanzania.
Enhancements: The Rubies in Ruby Zoisite are rarely gem quality, so typically these strikingly colored stones will remain intact. All Ruby Zoisites on the market are completely natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Other Names: Anyolite, Ruby in Zoisite, Ruby-Zoisite, Tanganyika Artstone
History of Ruby Zoisite
Ruby Zoisite is a relatively “new” healing stone whose properties have only recently begun to be explored. As a result, it was not included in early lapidaries, texts which describe gemstones and their powers.
Ruby Zoisite was first documented in 1949 by two English prospectors who had lived in Kenya for many years. During one expedition, one of the partners discovered a large flat basin of green stones covered in bright red Rubies. Some of the rubies could be picked right off the ground! Others were nestled within the Green Zoisite. Within two weeks, the site had been officially “claimed” and work began. The site would eventually be recognized as the largest single producer of Rubies ever discovered!
Today, most of the gem-quality Rubies are gone, and so the mine now exists to extract Ruby Zoisites, which are essentially low grade Rubies in a Zoisite matrix. These stones can be easily polished and carved for jewelry and decorative purposes. Depending on the size, shape, and location of the rubies within the Zoisite – fantastical carvings are possible!

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
