Mineral Family: Scolecite is a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Scolecite belongs to the Zeolite group, in which the stones have an open crystal structure that contains cavities in which molecules of water can be trapped. Zeolites are not well known outside of geological circles. In metaphysical circles, only Stilbite is well known.
Formation: Scolecite is a relatively common Zeolite found in igneous rocks. It is mostly composed of water and calcium, with only minor traces of sodium and potassium. It typically grows as needle-like crystals or in fibrous aggregations.
Enhancements: All Scolecites are fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
History of Scolecite
Scolecite is a relatively “new” stone to the metaphysical world and so its properties are still being explored. It was not included in any of the old lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers.
Scolecite name comes from the Greek skolek meaning “worm” because of the way it reacts to the blowpipe test, one of the more complex ways geologists identify minerals. Essentially, a fragment of a mineral is placed in the cavity of a charcoal block and a blowpipe is used to send a horizontal flame across it. Each mineral reacts in a different way. Sometimes the color of the mineral changes, sometimes the color of the charcoal. Sometimes the mineral will curl into a bead, or give off fumes or even volatilize and disappear completely! In the case of Scolecite, it shoots out small worm-like projections.
Healing Properties of Scolecite
Spiritual: Scolecite has an exceptionally peaceful, high vibration energy. It gently but powerfully opens our heart and crown, helping us to step into our Highest Self and act for the Highest Good. Scolecite asks us to take on a larger role to bring peace to this world and to ease the suffering of all beings, great and small. It opens our eyes to our greater existence, helping us to view ourselves not only as humans in this single lifetime, but as spiritual entities that have existed since the beginning of time and will continue to exist forever. Scolecite deepens meditation and strengthens our prayers, and helps us to hear the wise counsel of our spirit guides and angels. Scolecite is attuned to the Third Eye and Crown Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Capricorn. It is connected to the element of Wind and vibrates to the number 1.
Emotional: Scolecite sings a song of kindness and compassion. It invites our hearts to open up and to give and receive love and support freely. Scolecite helps us to sit in non-judgement, holding space for others and giving them the freedom to express what is real in their world and what they want and need in order to thrive. Scolecite likewise helps us to know the truth of what we really want and need, and to dare to express that openly. Scolecite is a wonderful stone for community-building, friendship, families, and other support-groups. It encourages people to come together in loving communion.
Mental: Scolecite brings peace of mind. It helps us to see the “big picture” and to view the world from a compassionate perspective. Scolecite invites us to explore our own prejudices and feelings of discomfort, looking at these beliefs and feelings in non-judgement and then releasing them so they no longer hold us back from the rest of humanity. Scolecite helps us to see all of mankind as our own dear family and to want to help each individual find joy and peace. It helps us to be in better control of our own lives, and moving forward towards whatever reality we most want to create.
Physical: Scolecite is said to treat depression and other mental/emotional disorders. It is most often used by metaphysical healers to treat intestinal disorders, spinal dis-alignment and to rid the body of parasites. It is also said to help clear the eyes and the circulatory system and to reduce insomnia.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Learn More: Ethical Lapidary
I first met one of the owners of the lapidary at the Denver Gem Show in 2017. Our first encounter was short since it was my last day of shopping and I had already spent most of my budget. But their tumbled stock was the highest quality I had ever seen. A few months later we met again in Tucson and this time I made sure to see them at the beginning of the show!
In 2019, at the Tucson Gem Show, I was able to sit down with both owners and have a lengthy conversation about sourcing. Unlike most vendors, they were willing to speak with me in-depth about how they make sure their business is ethical. We talked about individual mines they source from both in India as well as how they source from other countries. We also talked about how they treat their own workers and about the links between business, karma and God. Their willingness to talk and their pleasure at the conversation makes me eager to continue to develop and deepen this relationship.
