Healing Properties of Desert Rose Selenite
Spiritual: Selenite has an exceptionally high and pure vibration, which promotes super-consciousness. It connects us with our Highest Self, our Spirit Guides, and lights up the mystical pathway between ourselves and the Divine. Selenite can be used to access past lives – as long as our purpose is to seek healing and completion, not just simple entertainment. Selenite propels us forward, continually asking us to become the brilliant and vibrant person we are capable of becoming. It can be used to clear our aura, chakras, and other energy fields, and is an excellent tool for scrying, meditation and indoor grids. Desert Rose Selenite in particular is a wonderful crystal ally for strengthening positive affirmations and manifestation. It helps us to see our goals as clearly as possible and to frame them using positive language, such as “I will” and “I want to” rather than in negative terms, like “I won’t” or “I don’t want”. Selenite is attuned to the Third Eye and Crown Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Taurus. It is connected to the element of Wind and vibrates to the number 8.
Emotional: Selenite has a calm and wonderfully peaceful energy. It invites us to step into a bright new future and leave the past behind us. It can help us to overcome feelings of being stuck in a rut, or afraid to try new things. Selenite creates a protective and inspiring vibration field around us, so that we feel both safe and curious. Selenite also sings of pure true love, without any limitations or conditions. This is LOVE at its highest level. Selenite shows us that such love is possible and something that we should strive for in all of our relationships. Desert Rose Selenite is especially good at helping us to release old emotional beliefs that make us feel sad, anxious, or unworthy. It helps us to recognize that the old programming is neither truthful nor useful. Desert Rose Selenite helps us to easily embrace a new way of thinking that is honest and helpful as well as happy and hopeful.
Mental: Selenite aids discernment, helping us to swiftly analyze situations and people and to see both the superficial surface level, as well as deeper truths. It is a stone of Justice and Truth, and teaches that the spirit of the law is often more important than the letter of the law. Selenite is an advocacy stone for people who have been let down by the judicial system. It illuminates other potential paths forward for personal and societal peace. Selenite encourages compassion, but also shines a bright light on the mental blocks and privileges which allow good intentions to have disastrous results. Selenite asks us to think as clearly and purely as possible, assessing all sides and doing right by all. Desert Rose Selenite is particularly good at helping us to focus clearly and finding the correct pathway forward.
Physical: Selenite wands are commonly used by metaphysical healers to direct energy into the body. It is said to clear blockages and dangerous lumps in the body and to assist with chemo treatments for cancer. Selenite is believed to be especially good for treating the skeletal system, particularly the spine.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Desert Rose Selenite
Mineral Family: Sulfates
Chemical Composition: CaSO42H2o
Color: White, grey, brown, orange
Crystal System: Monoclinic
Luster: Subvitreous to pearly
Location: Desert Rose is a special form of Gypsum and is found in dry desert regions including Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Egypt, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Tunisia and the United States (Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas).
Mineral Family: Desert Rose Selenite is a rare form of Gypsum, a Sulfate mineral. Sulfates are a group of minerals whose crystal structure has four Oxygen atoms forming a square with a Sulfur atom in the center. There are approximately 200 types of Sulfates, with Gypsum and Baryte being very common and the rest being quite rare. While Gypsum is wide-spread and can be found in desert locations worldwide, Desert Rose Selenite is relatively rare. Bartye, Celestine and other minerals can also form “desert roses”.
Associated Minerals: Gypsum, Selenite
Formation: Desert Rose Selenite, like all other forms of Gypsum, are formed by the evaporation of ancient oceans. Due to its low solubility, Gypsum was typically the first mineral formed and it can take a variety of shapes from dazzling white sand dunes to fragile Desert Rose to shimmering Selenite. Desert Roses form as rosettes, or rose-shaped. If grown in a sandy location, inclusions in the normally white/colorless Desert Rose will change its color to brown or dusty-orange
Mining: Desert Rose Selenite is mined at its primary deposit. While Gypsum is commercially mined for industrial purposes, Desert Rose Selenite is mined primarily for decorative and metaphysical purposes. They can be small individual stones or massive formations.
Enhancements: All Desert Rose Selenites on the market are natural and have not been shaped in any way.
Other Names: Gypsum, Gypsum Flower, Sand Rose, Rock Rose, Selenite Rose, Baryte (Barite) Rose
History of Desert Rose Selenite
Selenite is a rare form of Gypsum. Gypsum is commonly found in deserts and other dry locations in many parts of the world. Common Gypsum was actively mined by the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Chinese and other civilizations, principally to be used as a plaster for building projects. Snow-white Alabaster, the massive form of Gypsum, has likewise been used to carve statues for millennia. Selenite, the fragile gem variety of Gypsum, is so soft that it can only be used for decorative and metaphysical purposes. Selenite literally means “moonstone”, from the Greek selene, or moon.
Desert Rose gets its name from its rosette shape, from the Latin word for “little rose”. While most of the Desert Rose on the market is a form of Selenite, Desert Rose can also be a form of Bartite. Desert Roses can be as little as 1/2 an inch in diameter to well over a foot in size. The largest single Desert Rose was a Bartite Rose that was 17 inches in length and 125 lbs, found in Oklahoma. Desert Rose (Bartite) is in fact the official state rock for Oklahoma. These particular crystals were formed 250 million years ago when Oklahoma and surrounding states were at the bottom of a shallow sea that was slowly evaporating, leaving salt plains behind. The Desert Rose Selenites found in Arizona and Texas were formed around the same time.
Many of the Desert Rose Selenites sold on the market are from North Africa. They were formed in the same way, much more recently. Today, North Africa is covered by the vast Sahara Desert. But as recently as 6,000 years ago, it was the world’s largest freshwater lake, known as Mega-Chad. As the planet warmed up, following the last Ice Age, the lake began to evaporate and was replaced by a desert dotted with Desert Roses. The last remnant of Mega Chad is the modern-day Lake Chad, the main source of water for more than 30 million people living in Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria. It has shrunk almost 95% since 1963.

The Lapidary & Importer
This Desert Rose Selenite was imported by a US mineral wholesaler.
The Importer is a family business run by a married couple.
The Importer pays its employees fairly.
Learn More: Ethical Lapidary
I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show. They carry a wide-variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare. The tumbled Celestite and specialty Obsidian particularly caught my eye, since no other source carries them. The owners are a married couple, he takes care of their larger stones, while she is the self-proclaimed, “Tumbled Stone Queen.” The Queen knows her stock inside and out and we’ve spoken in person and by phone about the geology and origins of various minerals.
The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause. I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions for the countries in question.
