Location: The largest and most important Selenite deposits are located in Mexico, Morocco and the United States.  Selenite is also found in Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Libya, Namibia, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkmenistan, and the United Kingdom.

Mineral Family: Selenite is the beautiful transparent crystal form of Gypsum, a Sulfate mineral. Sulfates are a group of minerals whose crystal structure has four Oxygen atoms forming a square with a Sulfur atom in the center. There are approximately 200 types of Sulfates, with Gypsum and Baryte being very common and the rest being quite rare.  While Gypsum is wide-spread and can be found in desert locations worldwide, the transparent variety of Gypsum called Selenite is relatively rare.

Associated Minerals: Howlite

Naicaa Mine, Mexico

Formation: Selenite, like other forms of Gypsum were formed by the evaporation of ancient oceans. Due to its low solubility, Gypsum was typically the first mineral formed and it can take a variety of shapes from dazzling white sand dunes to shimmering rosetta stones, and various crystal forms. Selenite crystals typically occur as tabular or columnar crystals with few inclusions and can be so clear as to appear glass-like. They often are found near hot springs.

Mining: Selenite is mined at its primary deposit.  While Gypsum is commercially mined for industrial purposes, Selenite is mined primarily for decorative and metaphysical purposes.  The most incredible Selenite mine is the Naica Mine in Mexico, also known as the “Cave of Crystals” and “Cave of Swords.  While its most striking feature is immense and numerous Selenite columns and spears (see the history tab for more details), the primary purpose of the mine is to extract Gold and Zinc.  In the picture at left, the Selenite has been cut away and either discarded or sold.

Enhancements: All Selenites on the market are natural, enhanced only through tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

Synonyms: Gypsum, Satin Spar, Gypsum Flower, Desert Rose

History of Selenite

Selenite is a rare form of Gypsum.  Gypsum is commonly found in deserts and other dry locations in many parts of the world.  Common Gypsum was actively mined by the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Chinese and other civilizations, principally to be used as a plaster for building projects.  Snow-white Alabaster, the massive form of Gypsum, has likewise been used to carve statues for millennia.  Selenite, the fragile gem variety of Gypsum, is so soft that it can only be used for decorative and metaphysical purposes.  Selenite literally means “moonstone”, from the Greek selene, or moon

Selenite was mentioned in the early-medieval lapidary / poem , De Lapidibus, by Marbode of Reenes (d35-1123).  He wrote:

In Persian lands, eagles’ nest concealed,
And by the Twins its virtues first revealed.
Nor must we pass the Selenites by
Whose hues with grass or verdant jasper vie.

With the lov’d moon it sympathy shines,
Grows with her increase – with her wane declines;
And since it thus for heav’nly changes cares
The fitting name of sacred stone it bears.

A powerful philtre to ensnare the heart
It saves the fair from dire consumption’s dart.
Long as the moon her wasted orb repairs
To pining mortals these effects it bears;

Yet ne’ertheless, when Luna’s on the wane
Men from its use will diverse blessings gain.
This stone, a remedy for human ills,
Spring, as they tell, from famous Persia’s hills.

While Selenite is most commonly pure white, it can occasionally come in other colors.  In this poem, the Selenite is described as being green and from Perisa, modern Iran.  While Selenite is no longer mined in Iran, many historical records describe hills covered with the pretty gemstone.

The most popular Selenites in the world come from Mexico, from the spectacular Sueva de los Cristales, or Cave of Crystals. It is actually three co-joined caves, each of which contains vast numbers of Selenite columns and spears. Some of the columns rise as high as 36 feet, and are the largest natural crystals in the world.  The temperature inside the caves is extremely hot, up to 150 F (65.6 C), and so it is difficult to remain inside for more than a few minutes.  This temperature is due to the presence of a pool of molten magma just below the cave’s floor.  During the 19th century, part of the cave was mined, not for the Selenite, but rather for gold and zinc.  Mining was temporarily halted in 1912 after tunneling into the impressive ‘”Cave of Swords”, but resumed again in 1922 and it remains a working mine today.

Healing Properties of Selenite

Spiritual: Selenite has an exceptionally high and pure vibration, which promotes super-consciousness.  It connects us with our Highest Self, our Spirit Guides, and lights up the mystical pathway between ourselves and the Divine.  Selenite can be used to access past lives – as long as our purpose is to seek healing and completion, not just simple entertainment. Selenite propels us forward, continually asking us to become the brilliant and vibrant person we are capable of becoming.  It can be used to clear our aura, chakras, and other energy fields, and is an excellent tool for scrying, meditation and indoor grids. Selenite is attuned to the Third Eye and Crown Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Taurus.  It is connected to the element of Wind and vibrates to the number 8.

Emotional: Selenite has a calm and wonderfully peaceful energy.  It invites us to step into a bright new future and leave the past behind us. It can help us to overcome feelings of being stuck in a rut, or afraid to try new things.  Selenite creates a protective and inspiring vibration field around us, so that we feel both safe and curious. Selenite also sings of pure, true love, without any limitations or conditions. This is LOVE at its highest level.  Selenite shows us that such love is possible and something that we should strive for in all of our relationships.

Mental: Selenite aids discernment, helping us to swiftly analyze situations and people and to see both the superficial surface level, as well as deeper truths.  It is a stone of Justice and Truth, one in which the spirit of the law is often more important than the letter of the law. Selenite is an advocacy stone for people who have been let down by the judicial system.  It illuminates other potential paths forward for personal and societal peace. Selenite encourages compassion, but also shines a bright light on the mental blocks and privileges which allow good intentions to have disastrous results.  Selenite asks us to think as clearly and purely as possible, assessing all sides and doing right by all.

Physical: Selenite wands are commonly used by metaphyscal healers to direct energy into the body.  It is said to clear blockages and dangerous lumps in the body and to assist with chemo treatments for cancer. Selenite is believed to be especially good for treating the skeletal system, particularly the spine.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the mine and lapidary in 2017 at the Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona.  Most of his stones were rough, rather than tumbled, but what caught my eye was his beautiful polished Selenites which came in a variety of shapes and colors.  I asked him to tell me about his business and he proudly told me that he had built the business up from nothing 20 years ago and his sons will inherit it when he is ready to retire.  We talked together about the importance of buying directly from the miners rather than middlemen, whenever possible.

Safe Handling of Selenite

Cleaning Healing Crystals

There are many ways to cleanse, charge, and set intentions with crystals.

Before cleaning your healing crystals, always consider the geology of each stone.  Some stones are sensitive to water and/or sunlight.  Best Practice is to keep your stones out of direct sunlight when you’re not working with them, simply because the sunlight will fade the crystal’s color over time.  This is especially true for transparent and translucent gems.  Remember crystals grow underground where it’s nice and dark!  Stones that are formed in dry desert conditions may be harmed by immersion in water.  This is especially true for fragile and porous stones.

One of the easiest and most effective way to energetically clean crystals is to smudge them with smoke from plants like sage, juniper, cedar, lavender, tobacco, etc.  Each plant has its own unique smell and spiritual property.  Moonrise Crystals smudges with white mountain sage (for cleansing) and sweet grass (for kindness) before the crystals are sent to their forever home with you.

Other common ways to energetically clean healing crystals are to set stones near a piece of Carnelian, Citrine, Kyanite, Selenite or other stones that are energy purifiers.  Be sure to pamper the purifying stones regularly so that they can continue to do their job properly.  Citrine and Kyanite are self-cleansers that don’t “need” extra care.  But they will love getting extra attention from you!

If a stone is doing a lot of heavy energetic work, one of the best ways to restore its energy reserves is to allow it to rest on the earth, next to a plant.  A potted plant inside the house works just fine.  Let the crystal rest overnight or longer, until its energy feels bright and sparkly again.

Charging and Setting Intentions with Healing Crystals

There is no right/wrong way to charge and set intentions.  But here’s a few ways that it’s done at Moonrise Crystals.

Cleanse the crystals and yourself.  It is good to take the time to physically clean stones before doing spiritual work.  It sets a tone of purity, respect, and reverence.  Hold the crystals or be near them.  Sing or talk to the stones.  Tell them about yourself and what you are working on.  Ask them for their help.  You don’t need to use any special words, simply speak from the heart.  Treat the crystals like your best friends and closest allies.    They want to help you.

If you feel shy or awkward, you can also write your message on a piece of paper and set the stones on top of it.  Music, including singing bowls, can also be used.  The most important thing is simply to be present with the stones and focused on setting the intention.

This can be done at any time, day or night.  However, nighttime is often a particularly good time for setting intentions.  Take the crystals outside, if possible.  You can talk to your crystals outside, or you may just want to sit near them and meditate or pray.

  • During the Full Moon, energy is amplified.  It is also a wonderful time to celebrate in the bright light when your intentions are already going well and you want to keep the trend going.
  • The New Moon is a time for new beginnings. The darkness is like planting a seed underground.  It will grow up into the Light.
  • Eclipses, meteorite showers, and other astronomical events will add their own unique energy.
  • Knowing where the moon is astrologically, can also add a fun element to intention setting.  The moon changes signs every 2-3 days.
