Rock Family: Shattuckite-Dioptase is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! In the case of Shattuckite-Dioptase, there are two main minerals, blue Shattuckite and green Dioptase, both of which belong to the Silicate mineral family. The stone may also include small traces of other minerals.

Formation: Shuttuckite and Dioptase are both rare minerals which form in desert areas as a secondary mineral in copper sulfide mineral deposits. In the case of a combined stone, the Dioptase forms first and then part of it pseudomorphs into Shattuckite.

Mining: Typically mined from primary deposits that still have their original relationship with the host rock. It is generally a small-scale affair.

Enhancements: All Shattuckite-Dioptases on the market are fully natural and have been enhanced only by cutting, tumbling, and polishing.

History of Shattuckite-Dioptase

Shattuckite-Dioptase is a combination of two copper minerals and has only found in Namibia.  It was recently introduced to the market and is not included in any known lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers.

Shattuckite was first discovered in 1915, in the Shattuck Mine near Bisbee, Arizona, from which it gets its name. By contrast, Dioptase has a history dating back thousands of years.

Healing Properties of Shattuckite-Dioptase

Spiritual: Shattuckite-Dioptase’s energy embodies the concept of “Satya” (Sanskrit for Truth). As a spiritual practice, Satya asks us to be truthful in our actions, words, and even thoughts. It teaches that when we live honestly, in our every aspect, we heal the world and are ourselves blessed. Shattuckite-Dioptase has a gentle but strong energy, encouraging us to live with common sense and moral decency. It sparks within us a desire to continually learn more and become more spiritually evolved and awakened. Shattuckite-Dioptase can also be used as a protector stone during channeling and communication with spiritual and extra-terrestrial worlds. Shattuckite-Dioptase is attuned to the Heart, Throat, and Third Eye Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Sagittarius, Scorpio, and Aquarius. It is connected to the elements of Water and Wind and vibrates to the Numbers 2 and 8.

Emotional: Shattuckite-Dioptase helps us to be especially honest in our relationships and to speak wisely and listen compassionately. It helps us to understand our own feelings and to better empathize with others. Shattuckite-Dioptase invites us to take more responsibility for our own lives and to acknowledge our own roles in creating the situations we find ourselves in. However, Shattuckite-Dioptase simultaneously helps us resist the urge to take all the blame and absolve everyone else. This stone helps us to see the world clearly, despite a fog of emotions. It reminds us that, above all, we must be honest with ourselves, acknowledging our own needs, wants, dreams, and desires, and to take action to create joyful abundance.

Mentally: Shattuckite-Dioptase is a stone of heart-wisdom, and helps us to see the world both pragmatically and compassionately. It helps us to let go of the past and pay more attention to our present and to the future we want to create. Shattuckite-Dioptase also stimulates both our intuitive and mental abilities, making it a useful stone for anyone studying metaphysical practices such as tarot, runes, astrology, Chakras, and, of course, crystal healing! It is a particularly good stone for anyone who teaches metaphysical subjects as it helps us to put into words concepts that are often first experienced in the intuitive gut and deep within the heart.

Physical: Shattuckite-Dioptase is most often used by metaphysical healers to treat physical diseases associated with the spleen and the throat, particularly disorders that may have their root in emotional pain and distress. It is said to help clear blockages on the cellular level and to encourage blood coagulation. Is is believed to be particularly useful for treating tonsillitis.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Sourcing Relationship

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business.  They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source.  The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally.  For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners.  The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.

Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin.  For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally.  They tend to get impatient with questions.  As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them.  However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.

Reviews

  1. Beth S. (Kentucky)

Both crystals are so full of personality! I love them both! The Shattuckite-Dioptase is adorable, and even more vividly colored than the photo showed, with its midnight blue Shattuckite and joyful splotches of teal-y, sea green-y Dioptase, as bold as if it’s laughing with joy just to be itself. It seems interestingly uncompromising, yet assuring, in its colors’ contrast and harmony, a message I look forward to considering as I carry it.
