Healing Properties of Snow Quartz
Spiritual: Snow Quartz shares the same basic energy as Clear Quartz, except that its energy is slightly softer. It can be used to amplify the power and energy of all other crystals. Snow Quartz can also help us to accurately see into the heart of all matters and align ourselves with our Highest Selves and the Highest Good. It can be used to communicate with Angels and Spirit Guides, quiet the mind during meditation, and amplify our own psychic abilities. Snow Quartz is attuned to the Crown Chakra (7th) and linked to the astrological sign of Capricorn. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 2.
Emotional: Snow Quartz is a gentle stone that quietly encourages us to find alignment and harmony. It can be used to filter out negative emotions and increase positive emotions. It offers support during difficult situations, when we have a tendency to feel overwhelmed and drained. It is especially good for anyone who has a tendency towards martyrdom or “victim mentality.” Snow Quartz gently reminds us that we do have some choice in our circumstances and our responses, and that we can choose a path leading to health and happiness.
Mental: Snow Quartz helps us to sort through complicated situations and correctly determine our role. If we need to let go of certain responsibilities, it shows us how to do so gracefully. Snow Quartz is a wonderful stone for diplomats, lawyers, and anyone who needs to use language to achieve proper cooperation. It reminds us to stop and think before we speak.
Physical: Snow Quartz can be used wherever Clear Quartz is used, most often in conjunction with other healing stones to amplify their specific power. The energy of Snow Quartz is somewhat gentler, making it especially suitable for treating children and elders.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Snow Quartz
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/Triagonal
Fracture: Conchoidal, very brittle
Location: Snow Quartz may be found worldwide, wherever Clear Quartz is present. The most important Snow Quartz deposits are in Brazil, Madagascar, the United States, and countries bordering the Alps such as Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland.
Mineral Family: Snow Quartz is the opaque white variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedra – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the three corners. These tetrahedras connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Purple Quartz is Amethyst. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. Opaque White Quartz is Snow Quartz.
Formation: Snow Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz. In the case of Snow Quartz, minute inclusions create a slight cloudiness which effectively transforms it from a transparent Clear Quartz into an opaque Snow Quartz.
Mining: Snow Quartz is a commonly found secondary mineral in many kind of commercial mines. Any mine that produces Clear Quartz or colored Quartz crystals is almost certain to also produce Snow Quartz as well.
Enhancements: All Snow Quartzes are fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: White Agate, Quartzite, Milky Quartz
History of Snow Quartz
Snow Quartz was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. However, various forms of Quartz have been used for jewelry as well as healing and spiritual purposes for centuries. It is certainly possible that Snow Quartz may have been similarly used at various points.

The Supply Chain
The Supply Chain is clean and relatively short.
The Mine and the Lapidary are located in different countries and at least one middleman is involved.
This Snow Quartz comes from a small Amethyst mine in Brazil.
The exact mine is unknown, but most likely caused only minimal environmental damage.

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
