Mineralogy of Snow Quartz
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/Triagonal
Fracture: Conchoidal, very brittle
Location: Snow Quartz may be found worldwide, wherever Clear Quartz is present. The most important Snow Quartz deposits are in Brazil, Madagascar, the United States, and countries bordering the Alps such as Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland.
Mineral Family: Snow Quartz is the opaque white variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedra – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the three corners. These tetrahedras connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is Clear Quartz or Rock Crystal. Purple Quartz is Amethyst. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Pink Quartz is, of course, Rose Quartz. Opaque White Quartz is Snow Quartz.
Formation: Snow Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz. In the case of Snow Quartz, minute inclusions create a slight cloudiness which effectively transforms it from a transparent Clear Quartz into an opaque Snow Quartz.
Mining: Snow Quartz is a commonly found secondary mineral in many kind of commercial mines. Any mine that produces Clear Quartz or colored Quartz crystals is almost certain to also produce Snow Quartz as well.
Enhancements: All Snow Quartzes are fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: White Agate, Quartzite, Milky Quartz
History of Snow Quartz
Snow Quartz was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. However, various forms of Quartz have been used for jewelry as well as healing and spiritual purposes for centuries. It is certainly possible that Snow Quartz may have been similarly used at various points.
Healing Properties of Snow Quartz
Spiritual: Snow Quartz shares the same basic energy as Clear Quartz, except that its energy is slightly softer. It can be used to amplify the power and energy of all other crystals. Snow Quartz can also help us to accurately see into the heart of all matters and align ourselves with our Highest Selves and the Highest Good. It can be used to communicate with Angels and Spirit Guides, quiet the mind during meditation, and amplify our own psychic abilities. Snow Quartz is attuned to the Crown Chakra (7th) and linked to the astrological sign of Capricorn. It is connected to the element of Water and vibrates to the number 2.
Emotional: Snow Quartz is a gentle stone that quietly encourages us to find alignment and harmony. It can be used to filter out negative emotions and increase positive emotions. It offers support during difficult situations, when we have a tendency to feel overwhelmed and drained. It is especially good for anyone who has a tendency towards martyrdom or “victim mentality.” Snow Quartz gently reminds us that we do have some choice in our circumstances and our responses, and that we can choose a path leading to health and happiness.
Mental: Snow Quartz helps us to sort through complicated situations and correctly determine our role. If we need to let go of certain responsibilities, it shows us how to do so gracefully. Snow Quartz is a wonderful stone for diplomats, lawyers, and anyone who needs to use language to achieve proper cooperation. It reminds us to stop and think before we speak.
Physical: Snow Quartz can be used wherever Clear Quartz is used, most often in conjunction with other healing stones to amplify their specific power. The energy of Snow Quartz is somewhat gentler, making it especially suitable for treating children and elders.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Earth to Pocket
Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.
These Snow Quartzes were mined in Brazil and tumbled in South Africa.
I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry, and are one of my favorite suppliers.
It would be my pleasure to hand-selected a beautiful Snow Quartz for you.
This price is for one stone.
You can buy a single Snow Quartz or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Snow Quartz measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges.
The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips and be pure white. If you buy multiple stones, I will select stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their unique beauty and clean energies, these Snow Quartzes are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

- Snow Quartz can be used in elixirs and oil essences – it is safe to drink “Snow Quartz water” or bathe in it.
- Snow Quartz can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
- Snow Quartz can be energetically cleansed with fresh or salt water. Soaking in moonlight or starlight, or smudging with smoke (typically sage) is also effective. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
Safe Handling of Snow Quartz
Good To Know:
Snow Quartz are physically durable stones. As long as they are rounded and without thin edges, they can be carried in a pocket or medicine bag, or worn as jewelry on an everyday basis, without significant danger of the stone chipping or breaking.
Snow Quartz can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
Snow Quartz can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
Snow Quartz can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing their color, especially if the stone is opaque, rather than translucent or transparent. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
Tumbled and fully smooth Snow Quartz can be safely used to make direct-infusion “Snow Quartz Water” for drinking or bathing. Before making any direct-infusion elixir ALWAYS check the mineralogical properties of the stone to ensure it is not toxic. Only use fully tumbled stones or natural Quartz points in direct-infusion elixirs, never rough stones. When in doubt, make an indirect-infusion elixir instead.
