Mineralogy of Snowflake Obsidian
Rock Family: Igneous Rock
Major Mineral: Volcanic Glass, Spherulite
Minor Minerals: Feldspar, Hematite
Color: Black, gray
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Snowflake Obsidian deposits are found in Mexico and the United States (New Mexico and Utah).
Rock Family: Snowflake Obsidian is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! Snowflake Obsidian is an igneous rock made of volcanic glass and Spherulite, with minor inclusions of Hematite and Feldspar.
Formation: Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, however the inclusion of various minerals can create colored varieties and sheens. Snowflake Obsidian is a type of Black Obsidian which has inclusions of white-grey Spherulites.
Mining: Snowflake Obsidian may be found on the surface of the Earth and requires little to no mining to extract.
Enhancements: All Snowflake Obsidian is natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Volcanic Glass
History of Snowflake Obsidian
Snowflake Obsidian was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. However, Black Obsidian was used by many nearby indigenous cultures to make weapons, tools, and ornaments, as well as for healing and spiritual purposes. From this it can be inferred that Snowflake Obsidian would have been similarly used.
Healing Properties of Snowflake Obsidian
Spiritual: Snowflake Obsidian has a slightly softer energy than pure black Obsidian. It helps reveal the unnecessary habits and beliefs that limit our lives. When used with conscious intent, Snowflake Obsidian deepens meditation to a remarkable degree and helps to reveal the incredible love and beauty inherent in the universe. It increases psychic sensitivity and the ability to communicate with lost loved ones. Snowflake Obsidian is attuned to the Root and Third Eye Chakra and linked to the astrological signs of Virgo and Sagittarius. It is connected to the element of Earth; and vibrates to the numbers 1 and 8.
Emotional: Snowflake Obsidian is a protective and gentle stone for anyone who is experiencing shock or trauma. It helps us to purify ourselves after pain and suffering so we can recover our balance and resume our normal life. Snowflake Obsidian can help us find the silver lining within difficult situations and is particularly good for reducing feelings of loneliness. It has a strong energy that gently reminds us to take charge of our own life and do the work to shift our reality.

I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem and Mineral Show. They carry a wide-variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare. The family is originally from Pakistan and was the first company to import K2, sky-blue Azurite from the famous mountain. When I first saw K2 I knew it was real, but didn’t know what it was and so approached one of the owners. He and I had an instant rapport.
Years later, we greet with a hug and he expects me to have questions about all his new stock. He tells me, with justifiable pride, about all the improvements he’s made to his business since we last spoke. In 2019, this source began to label all their stones with country-of-origin. When I asked him why, he told me that he listens to his customers and I keep asking him where all the stones come from.
