Healing Properties of Tektite
Spiritual: Tektites keep us grounded while also connecting us to the stars! They encourage us to be open to extrasensory phenomena, particularly telepathy and clairvoyance, as well as communication with extraterrestrials and inter-dimensional beings. Tektites are psychic tools, allowing us to explore the spiritual implications of moving beyond the normal space/time continuum and into the realm of pure energy. They can hugely expand our consciousness during meditation, and integrate that sensation into our physical body and daily life. Tekites can also reverse a chakra that is spinning in the wrong direction and balance the energy flow within our body. Tektite is attuned to ALL Chakras and linked to the astrological signs of Aries, Cancer. It is connected to the element of Storm and vibrates to the Number 9.
Emotional: Tektite helps us to quickly shake off old baggage from bad experiences and jump-start our own positive emotional transformation. It whispers softly and shouts happily about how good it feels to finally be FREE. Tektite encourages us to be ourselves and to celebrate our own incredible beauty and talents. Tektite attracts new friendships and partnerships and ensures that both individuals benefit from the relationship, receiving kindness and good council from one another. Tektite helps us become more “lucky” in our social connections, which can in turn lead to better luck in our romantic, career, and financial lives.
Mental: Tektite is a fantastic mental stone, encouraging us to become lifelong learners and to seek knowledge in every stage and aspect of our lives. It teaches us how to remember and learn from the lessons of negative experiences, without carrying the trauma of those experiences in our emotional bodies. Tektite encourages us to look deeply at situations, to ascertain the root of each situation and then calmly decide whether or not we should continue to participate with it. Tektite asks us to always choose the path that leads to Freedom and Bliss, for us as individuals as well as for all beings in the Universe.
Physical: Tektite has been used extensively by metaphysical healers, particularly “psychic surgeons” to energetically remove physical infections and diseases from the body. It can also be used to align the energy flow through the Chakras and Meridians, and to remove any energetic blocks that prevent us from enjoying good health. Tektite is also believed to reduce both headaches and fevers.
Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.
Mineralogy of Tektite
Rock Family: Igneous Rock
Major Mineral: Volcanic Glass
Color: Black, yellow, green
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Location: Tektites have been found in numerous locations around the world. While the majority are black, some Tektites are brown, yellow, or green! Most of the Black Tektite currently on the market comes from Australia or southeastern Asian countries, such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippians, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Vietnam.
Rock Family: Tektite is not a mineral, but rather a rock. An easy way to understand the difference is that rocks are like cookies and minerals are ingredients like flour or sugar. Many different minerals are used to create a rock! Tektite is an igneous stone with a variety of mineral compositions.
Formation: Tektites are a type of natural glass created by the force of a meteorite striking the earth. When a meteorite hits, it slams into the earth with such force that it creates an impact crater and tosses terrestrial stones high into the air. The enormous heat and pressure caused by the impact causes these terrestrial rocks to melt and be thrown far up into the atmosphere. Upon re-entry, the liquid stones quickly cool and solidify, raining down on the earth as Tektites. In the case of an especially large meteorite strike, Tektites can fall thousands of miles away from the impact creator! (For more information see the history tab.)
Mining: Found scattered on the surface of the Earth. In the majority of cases, Tektites can be related to a specific meteorite impact crater in the nearby region.
Enhancements: The majority of Tektites on the market are natural, enhanced only tumbling, cutting, and polishing. One exception is the recent appearance of fake Moldavite.
History of Tektite
Tektite is a relatively “new” healing stone whose healing properties have only recently been explored. As such it was not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, books describing healing stones and their powers. Nevertheless, Tektite has a fascinating history, extending back millions of years.
Tektites are formed when terrestrial rocks are thrown up into the air after a meteorite strikes the Earth. The force and heat of the meteorite impact is such that it briefly liquidized everything it touches. The earthly material soon returns to a solid shape and becomes a type of natural glass, similar to Obsidian.
Thousands of tiny meteorites hit the earth every year and unsurprisingly, moderate-sized meteorites also strike regularly. These are the “shooting stars” that delight us on warm summer nights. Large meteorites are much more rare. It is estimated that a meteorite 1/2 mile in diameter might land every 500,000 years, while a 3-mile long meteorite hits the Earth every 20 million years. A truly massive meteorite, over 6-miles long, is rarer still and powerful enough to dramatically change the entire globe and cause mass extinctions (just ask the dinosaurs). With so many meteorite impacts, one might expect Tektites to be fairly common. Instead, the opposite is true!
Scientists are still not sure exactly what conditions are necessary to create Tektites. There are four major Tektite strewn-fields in the world; Australia-Southeast Asia, Côte d’Ivoire (Africa), North America, and Eastern Europe. Each of these strewn fields was most likely caused by a single giant meteorite hitting the region. These strewn fields have been studied extensively and the chemical and isoptopic composition of the Tektites strongly indicates that Tektites were originally sedimentary rocks on the surface of the Earth, which became igneous rocks due to the force of a meteorite strike. For three of the strewn-fields, scientists have even located the meteorite impact crater itself. The Australasian strewn field impact crater remains undiscovered. But for all that, it appears that Tektites are only created under very special, and rarely met, circumstances!
The most famous variety of Tektite is the green Moldavite, which hails from the Czech Republic. Another distinctive variety is Libyan Desert Glass, which gets its golden yellow color from the surrounding Sahara Desert. North American Tektites come in two varieties, the metallic brown Bediasites in Texas and the green Georgiaites. Despite the fact that these two Tektites are completely different colors and are found almost a thousand miles apart, scientists believe both varieties were created by the giant Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater 34 million years ago.
Ethically Sourced Tektite
The Miners sell to a Gem Dealer/Exporter
The Exporter sells to a Lapidary.
The Lapidary sells to a US Wholesaler/Importer.
The Importer sells directly to Moonrise Crystals.
Moonrise Crystals sells directly to you.
The Supply Chain
The Supply Chain is complicated but likely clean.
The Mine, Lapidary and Importer are all in different countries.
At least two middle-men are involved.
This Tektite was artisanally-mined throughout the Australasian strewnfield.
It was most likely mined in southeastern China.
The exact deposit is unknown, but most likely caused only minor environmental damage,
and would have been relatively low risk for miners.

The Lapidary & Importer
This Tektite was tumbled in China.
Lapidary factories in China are typically safe for workers.
The Tektite was imported by a US mineral wholesaler.
The Importer is a family business run by a married couple.
The Importer pays its employees fairly.
Learn More: Ethical Lapidary
I first encountered the US wholesaler at the 2015 Franklin, North Carolina Gem, and Mineral Show. They carry a wide variety of tumbled stones, both common and rare. The tumbled Celestite and specialty Obsidian particularly caught my eye, since no other source carries them. The owners are a married couple, he takes care of their larger stones, while she is the self-proclaimed, “Tumbled Stone Queen.” The Queen knows her stock inside and out and we’ve spoken in person and by phone about the geology and origins of various minerals.
The amount of middlemen involved does give me pause. I only purchase stones from this source if I can’t find the stone elsewhere and I am confident about mining and lapidary conditions for the countries in question.
