Mineralogy of Thulite
Mineral Family: Sorosilicates
Chemical Composition: Ca2Al3(SiO4)3(OH)
Color: Salmon pink and green
Crystal System: Orthorhombic
Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven, brittle
Luminescence: Orangey-yellow (long wave)
Transparency: Translucent to Opaque
Location: Thulite deposits have been found in Australia, Norway, South Africa, and the United States (North Carolina and Washington).
Mineral Family: Thulite is a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals form the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Thulite belongs to the sorosilcate family, in which two tetrahedral groups share a single oxygen molecule. Thulite is a form of Zoisite and is closely related to the precious blue/purple gemstone Tanzanite.
Formation: Thulite is the pink manganese-rich variety of Zoisite. It can be found in the veins and fracture fillings of many different types of rocks. Thulite is pink, but many examples of it also have green areas, which is the more typical shade of Zoisite. It is often also mottled with white Calcite.
Mining: Thulite is a secondary stone found in many types of rocks. Most of the time, the Thulite is low-grade quality, but on rare occasions gem-quality crystals are found.
Enhancements: All Thulites are fully natural and have been enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Pink Zoisite
History of Thulite
Thulite is a relatively “new” crystal to the metaphysical community and so was not included in any ancient or medieval lapidaries, texts which describe crystals and their powers. Thulite was first documented in 1820 in the small village of Sauland, Norway. It was found in a gravel mine located between two small farms. There are no known legends directly associated with this stone, and its healing properties are still being explored.
Thulite was named after Thule, a legendary place in the far north of Europe, beyond the borders of the known world. Sometimes depicted as an island, it was listed on medieval maps as Ultima Thule, Latin for “Furthest Island.” Thule has been variously linked to Greenland, Iceland, Orkney Islands, Norway, and Shetland Islands, as well as other remote locations.
References to Thule date as far back as the ancient Greek geography, On the Ocean, written by Pytheas and describing his travels in 330-320 BCE. Thule was later referenced by virtually every major ancient and medieval geographer. Today, Thule lends its name to several locations in Greenland, Iceland, the Sandwich Islands, Scotland, as well as a section of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, USA. In addition to having the stone, Thulite, named after it, Thule also gave its name to Thulium, a rare and expensive element, occupying the 69th position on the Periodic Table.

Healing Properties of Thulite
Spiritual: Thulite is a joyful stone that reminds us that all the pleasures of life are proof that the Divine loves us and wants us to be happy! It encourages us to be more spontaneous, creative, and open to adventure. Thulite opens the heart to unconditional love and makes us more generous in giving love and more gracious when receiving love. It reminds us that we ARE our Highest Self, we just forget to act like it sometimes, and can become addicted to staying small. Thulite whispers sweetly that all we need to do is step back into the Light and just BE. Thulite gives us courage and strength so we can follow our heart and find our bliss. Thulite is attuned to the Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, and Throat Chakras and is linked to the astrological signs of Taurus, Gemini. It is connected to the elements of Water and Wind and vibrates to the number 5.
Emotional: Thulite encourages us to embrace our sensual and romantic sides. When we feel positive emotions, Thulite encourages us to live them to the fullest and enjoy every second. However, when faced with negative emotions, Thulite helps us to resist the urge to become overly dramatic or bogged down. It helps us to take life in stride, with a smile on our face and a kind word on our lips. Thulite gently removes negative vibrations from our emotional body and encourages us to see the silver lining in dark, stormy clouds. It strengthens our sense of empathy and our ability to relate to other people. Thulite also helps us to see our own beauty, both inner and outer, and to be self-confident without becoming arrogant or vain.
Mental: Thulite sparks our curiosity for the world around us. It encourages us to ask more questions, to do our own research, to experiment, and to invent. Thulite helps us to focus on solving problems, rather than bemoaning their existence. Lending us its happy energy, Thulite reminds us that every problem has a solution and that given proper attention nothing is impossible. Thulite also aids in self-reflection and the quest for self-knowledge. It helps us to examine our own dualities and to view ourselves both logically and lovingly. It is also said to fortify the nervous system and digestive tracts, and keep the body stable during time of high stress. Earth to Pocket
Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.
These Thulites were mined and tumbled in South Africa.
I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.
It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Thulite for you.
This price is for one stone. You can buy a single Thulite or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Thulite measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.
The stone I choose for you will be a dusky pink-purple with occasional pale green-grey markings. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.
With their subtle shimmer and clean energies, these Thulites are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, use them in a crystal elixir, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.
Safe Handling of Thulite
Thulite contains Aluminum and as such should NOT be used to make direct-infusion “Thulite water” for drinking or bathing. Having too much Aluminum in the body is toxic, and drinking direct-infusion elixirs of Aluminum-derived stones is dangerous. You can however, make a safe elixir using an indirect method – simply place the stone near, but not touching, the water.
Good To Know:
Thulite are physically durable stones. As long as they are rounded and without thin edges, they can be carried in a pocket or medicine bag, or worn as jewelry on an everyday basis, without significant danger of the stone chipping or breaking.
Thulite can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
Thulite can be energetically cleansed using any method. They will appreciate being soaked in fresh water, set outside to absorb the moonlight, and/or being smudged with smoke or incense. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
Thulite can be left in sunshine for extended periods of time without losing their color, especially if the stone is opaque, rather than translucent or transparent. However, it is always considered a “best practice” to keep your stones and crystals out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
