It encourages us to be social and spend time with people who make our hearts glad. Whiskey Quartz encourages collaboration and can help us to verbalize our thoughts aloud, sharing ideas with others and taking in valuable feedback. Whiskey Quartz reminds us that very little is truly “impossible” – those crazy ideas just take a little bit more work and energy! Whiskey Quartz encourages us to get busy “doing the impossible” and to pay no mind to anyone who says it can’t be done.
Physical: Whiskey Quartz has been used by metaphysical healers to treat conditions related to chronic stress and poor lifestyle choices. It is believed to be particularly helpful for treating the digestive system and the liver. It has also been used to treat alcohol related problems, metaphysically “biting the dog back.”

Mineralogy of Whiskey Quartz
Mineral Family: Tectosilicate
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Crystal System: Hexagonal/trigonal
Fracture: Conchoidal, very brittle
Location: Whiskey Quartz is a rare variation of Smoky Quartz. It has been found alongside the more common brown Smoky Quartz in several locations worldwide, including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Ghana, Hungary, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Scotland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.
Mineral Family: Whiskey Quartz is a type of golden-brown variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz, or Rock Crystal. Purple Quartz is Amethyst. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Pink Quartz is Rose Quartz. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Whiskey Quartz is a shade of Quartz that isn’t quite Citrine or Smokey, but somewhere in between the two.
Formation: Whiskey Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz.
Mining: Whiskey Quartz is typically found near or within Amethyst mines, which is also where most Citrine and Smoky Quartz comes from. The reason for this is that the only chemical difference between Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, and Whiskey Quartz is how quickly the silica acid cooled down!
Enhancements: Whiskey Quartz is fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.
Synonyms: Smoky Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Cairngorm
History of Whiskey Quartz
Whiskey Quartz is a relatively “new” stone on the market, and is often better known as natural Smoky Citrine. Whiskey Quartz is not included any ancient or medieval lapidary, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. The name, of course, honors the dusky golden color, remarkably similar to the drink.
The word “whiskey” (or whisky) is an anglicized word for the Gaelic uisce, meaning “water.” In classical Irish Gaelic, the beloved distilled liquor is called uisce beatha or “water of life!”

I have been doing business with this source since the earliest days in my business. They are a major tumbling company and have more varieties, in more sizes, than any other known source. The owners visit many small and industrial-size mines personally. For artisanal-mined deposits in sub-Sahara Africa, the owners work with Gem Dealers who deal directly with the part-time miners. The majority of these Gem Dealers are women.
Some, but not all, of their stones are labeled with country-of-origin. For those that aren’t, I have to ask the owners personally. They tend to get impatient with questions. As I’ve learned more about mining practices in individual countries, I have become increasingly selective about what I will purchase from them. However, they remain my preferred source for most of sub-Sahara Africa.
