Mineral Family: Whiskey Quartz is a type of golden-brown variety of Quartz, which is in turn a Silicate mineral. Silicate minerals are the largest family of minerals, including more than 25% of all known minerals and 40% of all common minerals. In addition to being a major part of the Earth’s crust, Silicate minerals have also been found on the moon and in meteorites. Silicates are minerals which contain the elements Silicon (a light gray shiny metal) and Oxygen (a colorless gas). Together, these two elements form a tetrahedron – a shape similar to a pyramid – with a Silicon atom in the center and Oxygen atoms at each of the four corners. These tetrahedra connect with other chemical structures, in six different ways, to form various minerals and rocks. There are six main groups of Silicate minerals, and these main groups are further subdivided into secondary subdivisions, such as Quartz and Feldspar. Quartz is a large mineral family in its own right and its members come in every shade of the rainbow. Colorless Quartz is called Clear Quartz, or Rock Crystal. Purple Quartz is Amethyst. Yellow Quartz is Citrine. Green Quartz is Prasiolite. Pink Quartz is Rose Quartz. Brown Quartz is Smoky Quartz. Whiskey Quartz is a shade of Quartz that isn’t quite Citrine or Smokey, but somewhere in between the two.

Formation: Whiskey Quartz is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools down and transforms into igneous rocks. During this cooling down period, silica acid bubbles shift from being a gas/liquid into a solid compound. The bubble becomes a hollow space in the igneous rock and the silica acid becomes Quartz crystals. If no trace elements are present to change its color, the silica acid becomes Clear Quartz.

Mining: Whiskey Quartz is typically found near or within Amethyst mines, which is also where most Citrine and Smoky Quartz comes from. The reason for this is that the only chemical difference between Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, and Whiskey Quartz is how quickly the silica acid cooled down!

Enhancements: Whiskey Quartz is fully natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

Synonyms: Smoky Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Cairngorm

History of Whiskey Quartz

whiskeyWhiskey Quartz is a relatively “new” stone on the market, and is often better known as natural Smoky Citrine. Whiskey Quartz is not included any ancient or medieval lapidary, texts which describe gemstones and their powers. The name, of course, honors the dusky golden color, remarkably similar to the drink.

The word “whiskey” (or whisky) is an anglicized word for the Gaelic uisce, meaning “water.” In classical Irish Gaelic, the beloved distilled liquor is called uisce beatha or “water of life!”

It is believed to be particularly helpful for treating the digestive system and the liver. It has also been used to treat alcohol related problems, metaphysically “biting the dog back.”

Earth to Pocket

Earth to Pocket is the Moonrise Crystal business mission. It’s the promise that any stones purchased here will be consciously sourced and the journey of the stone, from the Earth and into your Pocket, will be as transparent as possible.

These Whiskey Quartzes were mined in Brazil and polished in South Africa.

I met the owner of the South African tumbling company at the 2014 Gem and Mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. This company only sells tumbled stones twice a year, once at the Tucson show and later at the Sainte Marie Aux Mines International Mineral and Gem Expo in Provence, France. They offer the largest selection of high quality tumbled stones in the industry and are one of my favorite suppliers.

It would be my pleasure to hand-select a beautiful Whiskey Quartz e for you.

Your Stone

This price is for one stone.

You can buy a single Whiskey Quartz or several, depending on your individual needs. Each Whiskey Quartz measures approximately 1 inch at its longest length and has a unique shape with soft edges. Tumbled stones are natural products and variations are part of their beauty.

The stone I choose for you will be smooth and free of chips, and be a beautiful translucent golden-brown. If you buy multiple stones, I will choose stones that look and feel particularly good together. Stones will be cleansed and smudged with sage before being shipped to you.

With their distinctive color and clean energies, these Whiskey Quartzes are perfect for crystal healing. Add them to a medicine bag, place them on an altar, fashion them into jewelry, or simply carry them in your pocket.

What You Should Know:

  • Whiskey Quartz can be used in elixirs and oil essences – it is safe to drink “Whiskey Quartz water” or bathe in it.
  • Whiskey Quartz can be physically cleansed with water or a dusting cloth.
  • Whiskey Quartz can be energetically cleansed with fresh or salt water. Soaking in moonlight or starlight, or smudging with smoke (typically sage) is also effective. Use your own intuition to determine the best method.
