Healing Properties of White Calcite

Spiritual: White Calcite shares many of the same attributes as Clear Quartz, in terms of amplifying energy and facilitating manifestation. White Calcite removes energetic blocks and cleanses the entire Chakra system and aura. It is a stone for clear seeing, helping us to understand our true path and what steps we need to take to journey well. White Calcite’s exquisite energy helps us to surrender to the Divine and trust that all will be well. It can also speed up our spiritual development and increase intuitive skills. White Calcite is attuned to ALL of the Chakras and linked to the astrological sign of Cancer. It is connected to the elements of Fire and Wind and vibrates to the number 8.

Emotional: White Calcite gently releases fear-based beliefs, particularly those surrounding love and happiness. Anyone who fears they will never find love or has ever been ashamed of their good fortune would do well to work with this stone. It encourages us to be more loving and forgiving, towards ourselves as well as others, and also to celebrate the good things that happen. White Calcite has a calming and strengthening energy that can help us to keep moving forward despite setbacks. It reminds us to trust ourselves to make good choice and to trust the Divine to aid us along the way.

Mental: White Calcite reveals hidden possibilities, allowing us to take advantage of more opportunities for personal growth, financial success, and general life happiness. It helps us to release scarcity-thinking, allowing us to make better choices and move in more effective ways.  White Calcite is an incredibly effective stone to work with for anyone who needs to clear their mind and make decisions that rely on both logic and intuition.

Physical: White Calcite is widely used by metaphysical healers to treat a variety of illness and to amplify other crystals used in healing. It is additionally believed to stimulate the metabolism and as such is commonly used as a weight loss aid.  White Calcite is particularly helpful for anyone who needs to explore the mental and emotional blocks and beliefs that dictate their daily healthcare habits.

Always use wisdom when considering crystal therapies for healing.

Location: Calcite is one of the most wide-spread of all crystals and is found in virtually every country in the world.  Clear/White Calcite is the most common variety.  The most beautiful deposits of Clear Calcite are located in Iceland, hence the name “Icelandic spar,” as well as in Mexico.

Mineral Family: Clear/White Calcite is the colorless variety of Calcite, which is a Carbonate mineral. Carbonates are an important part of the Earth’s crust and are found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Carbonates are minerals which contain the carbonate group CO3 as their basic structural unit. They form in a trigonal system with one carbon atom centrally located between 3 oxygen atoms. While there are over 70 types of Carbonate minerals, the most common are Dolomite, Siderite, and Calcite.

Formation: Calcite is formed when liquid calcium, shell, coral, and algal debris settle onto the muddy bottom of a saltwater ocean or lake. From there they are gradually solidified into a single mass during diagenesis, the process of transforming loose sediment into a sedimentary rock. The resulting rock is typically Limestone, which is richly laced with small Calcite minerals. Later on, if the Limestone is subjected to heat and pressure, it can become Marble, a metamorphic rock. The heat and pressure of the metamorphic process causes larger Calcite crystals to grow. In rare cases, Calcite may be found as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks alongside calcium-rich Feldspar.

Mining: Calcite is a principal crystal extracted in commercial Limestone mines. It is mined in shallow pits at the primary deposit where the Calcite still has its original relationship with the host rock. After being extracted, Calcite is sorted into different grades depending on color. From a commercial viewpoint, the best variety is pure white, which can be pulverized into a powder and used to make rubber, paint, cement, textile goods, and especially ceramics.

Enhancements: All Calcite is natural, enhanced only by tumbling, cutting, and polishing.

Synonyms: Clear Calcite, Icelandic Spar, Optical Calcite

History of Calcite

Calcite was “discovered” relatively recently by the metaphysical community and so it was not included in any early lapidaries, texts that describe gemstones and their powers. Calcite is an extremely common and soft mineral which makes it an excellent choice for carving, both in ancient times and today. It is certainly possible that many of the carvings had healing and spiritual purposes.

Most Calcites are found in Limestone. In fact, the word “Calcite” comes from the Greek word chalix, meaning lime.

Sourcing Relationship

I first met the owner of the mine and lapidary in 2014 at the Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona.  At that time, he was set up with a single table and the only major Gem Show he attended was in Tucson.  While most lapidaries sell their tumbled stone in pre-packaged bags by the pound or kilo, this seller allowed me to cherry pick through his stock and buy only the best.  Since then, his spot in Tucson has expanded to four tables under a tent and he now sells at two of the major European shows.  It has been fun to watch our businesses grow.

In 2018, I asked the owner if he would be willing to help connect me with a rural school in Peru near his mine.  I told him that I wanted to “give back” to the communities that provided these beautiful crystals.  He was pleased by my request and later that year introduced me to the principle of a suitable Peruvian school.  We hope to begin supporting this school in the 2020-2021 school year.
